As everyone on the Web knows by now, Steve Jobs does not think too highly of Flash and therefore you cannot watch Flash videos on the the iPad (or the iPhone). Apple’s position has stirred a lot of debate about how much video on the Web is iPad-friendly. It turns out that about two thirds of new videos are currently being encoded in the H.264 format, which is playable on the iPad, but media sites still need to either package that video in an app or in an HTML5 video player viewable in the iPad’s browser.
Streaming Media decided to shed more light on the issue by surveying 1,147 online media professionals about their iPad and HTML5 video plans in a report available here. According to the survey, 49 percent plan to support HTML5 video on their media sites by the end of next year, and 36 percent plan to support video on the iPad either through dedicated apps or an iPad compatible Website.

Huang Xiao Ming possesses a famous, distinctive cleft in his chin. Recently, tabloids published photos of Xiao Ming before his meteoric rise to fame and the before and after changes in the photos were quite apparent.
Allegedly, Xiao Ming may have received plastic surgery on his chin. Some people point to the scar on his chin as proof. But Xiao Ming claimed that the scar was due to an injury when he was younger.

This isn't so much news as it is a public service announcement: even in markets where iPhone tethering has launched, you've never been able to use it to connect to an iPad, and you won't be able to when AT&T flips the switch on tethering with the release of OS 4. That's clearly not AT&T's fault, it's Apple's -- the iPhone inexplicably supports only USB and Bluetooth for sharing its internet connection, even though jailbroken apps like MyWi prove that a WiFi connection is totally doable and countless other handsets already support WiFi routing. And iPad doesn't support using another device as a Bluetooth modem, either. And as long as you're paying the tethering fee, there's no reason why AT&T wouldn't want you tethering the iPad; you'll certainly be able to do it with any phone in AT&T's lineup that can create a WiFi hotspot, after all, and we're sure they'd be happy to take your overage cash once you hit 2GB regardless of the device you're using to gobble the data.
In the meantime, you know what you can tether to an iPad? A phone running Froyo, for one -- Google was certainly happy to show off that capability back at IO. Or pretty much any device running S60 from the last several years. Or a Palm Pre Plus... yeah, you get the idea.

Mesmerized by that 5-inch display? Looking to get in on the action for yourself? If you're in the UK, take note: the Dell Streak is listed as "in stock," with prices starting at free on contract.

At least one surgeon in Japan is using an iPad in the operating theater (a term we learned from M*A*S*H). It's unclear to us whether it's attached to an endoscope, he's looking at reference photos, or even if the device is serving any use at all other than attracting TV coverage, but it sure looks like the real thing -- he's pinching to zoom through latex gloves and everything! The next obvious question is, of course: is there an app for that operation? Video after the break.

There was a serious car accident in the mainland last Saturday. Luckily, no one was injured. The van which was involved in the accident was the one which carried Jacky Cheung's "Private Corner" Crystal CD cover. All the covers were ruined in the accident. Fortunately, as there were no CD inside the cover, the loss was minimum.
The record company was glad that the driver was not hurt, but the delivery of the CD that the fans have ordered have to be postponed. Jacky said as long as the driver is OK, it doesn't matter that the covers were ruined. He is hoping his fans will be patient and wait for the CD. It will take the company another three weeks to make the crystal CD cover. The fans can collect their order in three weeks time. The estimated loss of the accident is a 5 figure sum.

This is how Foxconn employees feel, according to a 21-year-old whom Bloomberg called Ah Wei because he preferred to remain anonymous. Ah Wei copes with these conditions for a monthly salary of 900 yuan ($132).
[Bloomberg—Thanks, Alex!]

Steve Ballmer

Steve Ballmer took his turn in the hot seat today at D8, and anybody hoping for a few candid spitballs from Microsoft's quotable CEO wasn't disappointed. Ballmer had plenty to say about everyone's faults—starting with his own company's:
It's no secret that Windows Mobile 6.5—you know, the one before Microsoft gutted everything in favor of Windows Phone 7—was an out and out disaster. But it can't be easy for the CEO of one of the most powerful companies in the world to declare his product in last place. Even more so to say they missed a cycle entirely. But maybe by being so honest about Microsoft, Ballmer earned a little more cred when he went after his competitors.
I guess the news really hadn't been confirmed, but it's still kind of funny to me that Rosie Huntington-Whiteley being confirmed as the replacement for Megan Fox in "Transformers 3" qualifies as news today. The last report revealed that she was a top contender and that an offer had in fact been sent out. Did anyone really think she was going to say no?
Okay, okay... I get it. It's news. She's in and it's official. Really, the whole point of this post is to show you the hilariously excellent congratulatory video that Huntington-Whiteley's employer Victoria's Secret cut to celebrate the casting news. You can find that video after the jump, but take note: there are no robots. Unless they're in disguise. Which I guess they could be-- this is "Transformers" we're talking about.

Kim HeeChul has once again expressed interests for WonderGirls SoHee.
Kim HeeChul was on MBC FM4U ’2pm Date with Park MyungSoo’ when he was asked, “Is there anyone whom you are interested in?”. His answer was, “I don’t like it that when people are asked such a question they answer that they like everyone. I like being honest. I like female singers like 4Minute, Secret and After School – those who have the cutesy image lately. Awhile ago, WonderGirls returned to Korea and I saw SoHee. She is really someone whose cuteness is just overwhelming. Usually I’m someone who is alright with most females, but SoHee is just really cute.”
Already before this, Kim HeeChul had expressed his interests for SoHee on different variety shows like SBS Family Outing and MBC Come To Play.

Last year, Sprint wasn’t doing itself any favors with its absolutely awful Palm Pre TV ad campaign, but this year’s hero phone — the HTC EVO 4G — has an ad that people will actually “get”. Sure, it might be a bit too DROID Does for some, and others will likely be reminded of those “we are all one” ads played frequently during the Olympics and World Cup, but for our money the ad is great. Check it out after the jump.

No, you’re eyes are not deceiving you — that is indeed one giant, tablet-ized version of the Samsung Galaxy S your weary eyes are peepin’. Posted by the official Twitter page for Samsung South Africa, the tablet was referred to as the “Galaxy Tab”. Right now all we know is that the thing runs Android with TouchWiz UI, operates on 3G networks, has a front-facing camera and 3.5mm headphone jack. The presence of a “Phone” icon also suggests that the Galaxy tab will also be able to place calls, although it it not clear yet if a headset — Bluetooth or otherwise — will be required. A later tweet from Samsung South Africa also claimed that “this particular one is a 7″ model and has a high-res TFT screen.” This of course makes sense considering that such a large AMOLED display would be incredibly expensive to produce and sell and that there is currently a shortage of the such displays. Then again, there were those S-Pad rumors floating around a few months ago. Would it be wrong for us to read a lot into the “this particular one” and assume that there are more coming, perhaps ones with nicer displays?

Here’s a sneak peek at the new Captain America. At long last, Marvel has its Steve Rogers. Last month, Chris Evans — best known for his role as “The Human Torch” in Fantastic Four — to play Captain America.
Don’t forget to let us know what you think of Captain America’s new look!
Captain America: The First Avenger — directed by Joe Johnson — goes into production in London later this month. The superhero epic is expected in theaters on July 22, 2011.
So, there may never be a Windows 7 Phone tablet, but that device above looks pretty darn close to what one may have looked like. In actuality that's just the tablet that Microsoft has been using at Computex to demo its new Windows Embedded Compact 7 supporting Silverlight for Windows Embedded, Flash 10.1, and multitouch within the browser. We caught a few minutes with the NVIDIA Tegra 2-powered, 8.9-inch slate and found ourselves drooling over the Zune / Windows Phone 7-like interface that had been built by Microsoft. But before we tell you to jump past the break to check out the short demo, we want to break the news to you that this UI was created just to show off the capabilities of the new CE platform -- there's no plan to bring it to market as is on Microsoft's end at the moment. Instead manufacturers, like ASUS and others, have to do their own engineering with the preview release and then the RTM build that will come later this year. But we certainly wouldn't object to one of those companies creating something similar to what you are about to witness in the gallery and video below.

And once again we have proof that where there’s a good amount of smoke, there’s likely to be fire. Today Nokia announced it will be bringing the E73 Mode, a Symbian S60 device said to offer a perfect balance between work-life and, uh, life-life, to T-Mobile. Best thought of as a E72 with a facelift, the Mode features not only a 2.4″ QVGA display, full-QWERTY keypad, 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and 10.2Mbps HSDPA, but also free turn-by-turn navigation from Ovi Maps. The Nokia E73 Mode will be available from T-Mobile on June 16th for $69.99 on a 2-year contract.

Looks like it's blowhard season up in Redmond these days, as the latest word from Microsoft on its Live Essentials suite of apps has been accompanied by the brash pronouncement that it's now markedly superior to Apple's efforts in Mac OS X -- at least when it comes to photos. This verdict was delivered by Brian Hall, General Manager for Windows Live, and is backed by a laundry list of new features we can expect by the holiday season of this year. Windows Live Photo Gallery and Movie Maker will soon be able to link up directly to sites like Flickr, Facebook and YouTube -- which will allow for painless uploads as well as pulling in any additional tagging done on Facebook. New photo stitching and retouching abilities, along with face recognition (rather than mere detection) are also being touted, but the ultimate arbiter of the new software's utility will obviously be the real hands-on experience for users. We shouldn't have to wait too long for that, as a beta version of the freely downloadable (on Vista and 7, XP holdouts are no longer being served) suite should be making the rounds in the coming weeks.
