Will Justin Bieber's Fame Equal Box Office Success?

The big news out of Hollywood this past week is that Justin Bieber, he of the flash Bieber mobs, he of the delightfully tousled bangs, he who is constantly being searched on Google by legions of lovesick teenage girls is going to be coming soon to a movie theater near you....in 3-D.

The film will be a concert biopic with behind the scenes footage of Bieber's life. Millions upon millions of fans devour any Bieber footage that YouTube has to offer. The question is will those fans pay the nearly $20 admission for a 3-D movie?

A similar project, 'Jonas Bros: The 3D Concert Experience' was a bit of a letdown, bringing in only $19 million at the box office.

But the Jonas Brothers, though themselves a teen sensation, are not Bieber. Girls aren't being trampled in Jonas flash mobs, so make the comparisons all you like, the audience for Bieber is much more fiercely loyal. Come February 2011, I am willing to bet they will be lining up in droves to get some Bieber smack in their face.

"Given Justin's track record with album and ticket sales so far, his movie should be a hit. First of all, the timing is great -- this year's 'Valentine's Day' movie featuring Taylor Swift topped the box office over the Valentine's Day holiday weekend The only potential weakness is that Justin's acting abilities are still untested, but that won't keep his fans away from theaters, especially when they'll have the chance to watch him in 3D for about two hours," says Billboard.com News Editor Monica Herrera

5 Things Google Still Needs to Fix in Android

Any day now, the Evo 4G is going to get an over-the-air update to Android 2.2 (aka Froyo), complete with marquee features such as the ability to play Flash video and share contact details over Bluetooth. But after spending every day with a Motorola Droid, now running Android 2.1, we can think of plenty of smaller things we wish Google would work on instead.

High on our list, for instance: Make spellcheck work consistently across the platform and sync with business-grade Google Apps calendars. If Flash support won’t even allow you to watch Hulu videos on your phone (Hulu cruelly blocks mobile access), what else can Google do to make Android a more polished, user-friendly platform?

Push for More Consistency

It’s the small things that add up. For us, one of the most annoying things is the fact that if you make a spelling mistake while searching for an app in Android Market, Android doesn’t correct you.

Email-based FaceTime support surfaces in iOS 4.1 beta 3

Fool us once, shame on us. Fool us twice? Fuhgetaboutit. Apple has a thing for introducing new iPods each fall, and given that the existing touch is being given away gratis with a new student computer (not to mention how long in the tooth it is), we're guessing the tradition will continue in 2010. We'd heard earlier on in the year that Apple may toss FaceTime over to the iPod line whenever it finally gained a front-facing camera, and now the evidence is nearly too strong to ignore. In the latest iOS 4.1 beta (numero three, if you're keeping count), there's an option to connect to a contact via FaceTime by ringing their digits or by pinging their email address. We're guessing that the latter is there mostly for iPod touch users (the ones without Apple Peel 520s, anyway), and it's the most glaring sign yet that the next generation touch will flippin' finally boast a camera (or just a way around that SMS-based activation?). Still, we wouldn't get our hopes up too high -- falling ain't no fun, you know?

Apple's head of iPhone engineering out after 'Antennagate'

But analyst argues that Mark Papermaster's departure may be due to culture shock

Mark Papermaster, Apple's senior vice president of engineering for the iPhone and iPod, is leaving the firm, according to reports by The New York Times.

Apple spokesman Steve Dowling confirmed to the publication that Papermaster is leaving the company. His responsibilities will be assumed by Bob Mansfield, vice president of Macintosh engineering.

Papermaster's biography and photograph have already been yanked from Apple's Web site. Google's cache indicated that it had been pulled sometime after last Tuesday.

Dowling did not respond to e-mail from Computerworld seeking confirmation and asking whether Papermaster's departure was connected to the complaints earlier this summer about the iPhone 4's reception.

Papermaster, a 26-year-veteran of IBM, joined Apple in October 2008, but was barred from working at the Cupertino, Calif. company five days later when IBM filed a federal lawsuit that claimed he had signed a non-competition agreement. IBM also argued that working for Apple would "irreparably harm" his former employer.

The bulk of Papermaster's time at IBM was in processor design, and he eventually became IBM's vice president of microprocessor technology development.

Apple and IBM struck an agreement in January 2009 that allowed Papermaster to begin his stint with Apple in April of that year. In his position, Papermaster oversaw the engineering of two of Apple's four revenue pillars: the iPhone and the iPod. In the second quarter of 2010, those two lines generated 44% of the company's total income.

Papermaster's departure immediately ignited speculation that it was connected to what Apple CEO Steve Jobs called "Antennagate" last month.

Jay Park wants to collaborate with Taeyang

On August 7th at 4:30PM, Jay Park met with reporters for a press conference in front of a hotel in Kangwondo before he had to go on stage at Summer Week&T 2010. There he was asked which singer he’d like to collaborate with.

Jay answered, “In preparations for my new upcoming album, I worked with Brave Brothers, Dok2 and many other artists. If the opportunity were to ever arise, I would like to work with the very talented singer Kim Jo Han. I ‘ve always liked Taeyang, so I think collaborating with him would be fun.”

Well there you have it folks. Though there is no indication of a Jay/Taeyang collaboration coming anytime soon, but do you think the joining of these two forces might be something you’d like to hear? One thing’s for sure–it’d definitely be hot. Butter them biscuits please.

Lady Gaga Fires Up Lollapalooza, Stage-Dives

Three years after bombing at her first Lollapalooza, Lady Gaga returned to Chicago on Friday night and proceeded to remind all those skeptics why she's the superstar she is.

"My name is Lady Gaga. I thank you for coming to my show. I didn't used to be brave. In fact I wasn't very brave at all," she told the crush of fans. "But you have made me brave, little monsters. So now I'm going to be brave for you. Tonight, I want you to free yourself."

'Other Guys' scores Friday; 'Step Up 3D' stumbles

Will Ferrell is back and audiences are loving it. The Saturday Night Live alum’s pairing with Mark Wahlberg has proved to be a very successful combination, as The Other Guys scores a $13 million Friday, knocking Inception off the top spot for the first time in four weeks. The PG-13 buddy comedy directed by Adam McKay could reap $35-$36 million over the weekend, marking Ferrell’s second highest-grossing opening ever behind Talladega Nights in 2006.

Inception continues its incredible run, dropping only 31 percent from last Friday for another $5 million and a likely weekend take of $19 million. Launching the third iteration of Step Up in 3-D did little to boost the franchise. With a bit over $6 million on Friday, the Disney release is not expected to make much more than $16 million over the three-day frame, less than its last two predecessors.

Spot four is looking like a three-way race between Salt, Despicable Me, and Dinner for Schmucks. All three earned around $3.3 million on Friday night for a weekend that will be in the $10 million range. It seems Schmucks was the one movie hit the hardest by The Other Guys, down some 59 percent from its opening weekend.

HTC's dual-mode CDMA / GSM Android slider with 1.2GHz CPU headed to Verizon in 2011?

It's not expected to land at Verizon until sometime in 2011, but it's never too early to take a look at an unannounced Android slider with specs like this. Leaked by Androidswag, the device is purportedly hiding a 1.2GHz processor (would that be dual-core?) beneath that 4-inch display -- the sweet spot for size and pocketability. The prototype pictured above was apparently sporting a Vodafone SIM card making this a pretty bodacious CDMA / GSM worldphone by the time it lands for retail. Of course, anything, or everything, could change by the time this pup is ready for launch and we'll be here covering every step of its journey. Two more shots after the break including a size comparison with the EVO 4G -- a few more at the source link below.

Vic Chou's new movie "Love You 10000 Years" premieres

Yesterday, Vic Chou attended the premiere event for his latest movie Love You 10000 Years, along with co-star Kato Yuki and Director Kitamura Toyoharu. More than a thousand fans from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and other places in Asia went to support the star. Vic kept himself busy in promoting his new film; He first did interviews with the media in the afternoon, attended activities organized by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau where he met with fans, and then at night, he attended the premiere of the movie. Some fans from all across Asia spent as much as forty thousand dollars (NT) just to follow Vic for two days and participate in his premiere events at Taipei and Taichung, as well as his two fan meetings.

In a recent interview with host Matilda Tao, Vic expressed his thoughts on men needing to make more money than women, “If a man makes less money than the woman, he will not have any say on anything.” In the end, the media took his explanation as a reason for his breakup with Barbie Hsu. A little flustered, Vic advised everyone to watch the interview in full to understand. But in regards to earning money, Vic emphasized, “Isn’t a man’s career important?... Unless he’s living off of the woman. If I get married and build a family in the future, I hope that I can be responsible for my family.” He added that he feels his career achievement is not up to standards yet. He hopes that he will get there when he’s 40. When asked if he explained this to Barbie, he commented, “There’s no need to care so much about these types of reports.”

What would Disney say? Vanessa Hudgens shakes off squeaky clean High School Musical image with raunchy role

She is famed for her role as goody-two-shoes teen Gabriella Montez in High School Musical and dates her equally clean-living former co-star Zac Efron.

But it seems Vanessa Hudgens is keen to shake the squeaky clean Disney shackles if her raunchy performance in the musical Rent is anything to go by.

In a series of increasingly revealing costumes, the 21-year-old actress and singer gave a provocative performance in the part of Mimi, an HIV-infected stripper.

And while he was no doubt proud of his girlfriend, Efron - who was in the audience throughout the show at the Hollywood Bowl - must have found it slightly uncomfortable viewing at points.

In addition to passionately kissing her co-star, Gossip Girl actor Aaron Tveit, Hudgens poses sexily for him and dances in a way that would be far too X-rated for High School Musical.

Katy Perry Blasts Lady Gaga Over God: Quips & Quotes

In this time of celebrity entourages and PR protection, it's rare for a star to make a false statement. But Hollywood is nowhere near perfect, and every so often its peeps will make an off-color comment or reveal more than they intended to. We keep you informed of the most noteworthy Tinseltown talk with our weekly installment of Quips & Quotes.

This week, the world of entertainment seems to have folded in on itself. We have crazy things happening, like Sarah Palin's daughter taking up all the ink and online space, or former Fugees member Wyclef running for president of Haiti. Perhaps most intriguing of all is the musician tiff between Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, two titans currently on the charts. According to Perry, God, sex and music do not mix.

HTC Desire HD spotted in the wild with EVO-like form factor, Android 2.2 on board?

Well, would you look at that -- it's an Android 2.2 handset with a giant screen, HTC watermark and plenty of similarities to (though apparently no front-facing camera like) the EVO 4G. Could this be the 4.3-inch, 1GHz HTC Desire HD? That's what a Hong Kong forum claims, and we've no doubt we'll have pseudo-confirmation at some point soon given how quickly and thoroughly handsets are leaking out these days.

Female artists upset at new term "remaining women" describes the single middled-aged

Lately, Mainland Netizens fried up the term "the remaining women" (剩女), describing women who have passed marriageable age and are a success in their careers, but are still single. Plus recently the government announced that there are more women than men in Hong Kong now, particularly more middle-aged women. "The Remaining Women" is also seen as a derogatory term. Have once been classified before, Miriam Yeung got married last year and separated from that group, but she still felt grief for her 'sisters' being labeled as 'surplus women'. She voiced out her feelings on Weibo and got thousands of retweets and 400+ replies. This stirred up heated feedback by Netizens.

Not fair to middle-aged women

Even 1989 Miss Hong Kong winner Monica Chan expressed her support on Weibo. Yesterday she accepted an interview and strongly stressed that Miriam Yeung was not being emotional: "I saw the two words 'remaining women' on the news and felt that I have to voice out my opinion. This term is strange, not fair to women, why are they only talking about women and not men?" Monica stressed: "If I wanted to get married, I would just do it for love, not the age!"
