Rihanna to Make Acting Debut Aboard Battleship

Here's hoping Rihanna doesn't sink Battleship.

The 22-year-old pop-R&B star has signed on to make her feature-film debut in the action flick, which, as it sounds, is inspired by the classic Hasbro board game, her rep confirms to E! News.

While the songstress' soundtrack credits on IMDb are many, she's yet to appear as anyone but herself on TV, let alone the big screen.

But at least Rihanna's got a seaworthy cast and crew behind her, including Friday Night Lights hunk Taylor Kitsch and True Blood hottie Alexander Skarsgård as brothers who end up leading the fight for their planet's survival against an otherworldly force.

Hancock helmer Peter Berg is attached to direct with an eye on a May 25, 2012, release date.

Joey Yung lenient when giving marks

Joey Yung, William Chan and EEG's executive Ng Yu were finalising the (EEG Singing Competition's) contestants' short videos. This time inviting contestants to participate through the internet, Joey Yung praised that the contestants were of good qualities, but judging through the short videos wasn't easy, "Fitting yourself in such a small screen, could see the head but could not see the whole body, so when giving marks, she would be more lenient. When asked about whether they would search for talents based on their appearances, Joey and William both felt that as a singer, the best is to have talent and good voice, and it's also important to be liked by audiences.

Besides this, Joey Yung accepted an interview and said that in her concert Summer Pop which will be held at the end of August, she would sing her teacher, Roman Tam's song. She also said that maybe recently her make up was too thick, making her look fierce, and Vincy Chan's look is abit more pitiful, inviting rumours saying that they are not in good terms, she praised Vincy as "a girl who really likes to sing, but is worse than me when it comes to talking."

Radar Online has posted another in its series of Mel Gibson tapes and this time, a former James Bond star is in his sights.

The new tape, which can be heard in its entirety at Radar Online shows a jealous Gibson throwing verbal grenades towards Oksana Grigorieva's former lover Timothy Dalton.

Gone is the panting as well as the shouting. Grigorieva also does not participate in the conversation, leaving Gibson to get nasty all by himself.

No Matter What Lawyer Hopes, Lindsay Lohan Not Getting Out This Week

Lindsay Lohan isn't going anywhere fast.

Los Angeles Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore tells E! News that reports that the actress could be getting out of slammer much earlier than thought, even possibly this week, are not true.

"Nothing has changed," Whitmore says. "When she was incarcerated I said a couple of weeks and it hasn't been a couple of weeks. That turns out to be the first part of next week. It could be Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, something like that."

And that has to be a blow to Team LiLo.

Just moments before Whitmore dashed her dreams, Lohan's off-on lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, expressed hope that jail officials might release the 24-year-old trainwreck by the end of the week due to overcrowding.

"I have my fingers crossed and Lindsay does too," the legal eagle told E! News earlier today upon leaving the Century Regional Correctional Facilty after a second powwow with the actress.

Apple cancels waiting lists for iPad and iPhone 4

This past weekend, Apple stores have sold more iPads and iPhones than usual to people that were on the waiting lists for those devices.

Anything between 1,000 and 2,000 sales per store were made this way, with Apple emailing the people who had registered to buy and letting them know to come and pick their device(s) up.

However, it appears that from now on, there will be no more waiting lists. Furthermore, even those that were already created have been scrapped.

This means that even if you were on a waiting list, you shouldn’t count on Apple contacting you when they’ve got your device in stock. You should just walk in to an Apple store and buy whatever it is you need.

Is Android 3.0 Gingerbread already out in the wild?

Google is set to release the next major version of Android by the end of this year. Sticking with their sweets-inspired codenames, this one will be dubbed Gingerbread.

Clearly, if they want to release it this year, Google engineers are already hard at work on Android 3.0. However, no one outside of Google should have access to this version so early in the development cycle.

That said, make of this picture what you will.

This may be legitimate. It may be a test phone inside Google. It might be a Google engineer’s phone. It may even be that somehow, someone outside Google managed to get their hands on a phone running Gingerbread for a few minutes and snapped this photo.

Or it could be a well made Photoshop fake.

How will Apple respond to the DMCA revision? They won’t.

Today’s adjustment of the DMCA has far-reaching legal implications, which will only be evident after a few weeks, months, or even years as various parties exploit them however they can. I’m going to let the experts play in that sandbox. But one of the new rules seems to have had a specific target in mind: Apple. To wit:

(2) Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications, when they have been lawfully obtained, with computer programs on the telephone handset.

The language is a bit confusing, but the end result is the legalization of jailbreaking your phone and side-loading apps. Not that it was ever illegal, although some Apple store employees thought otherwise. Now that it’s been made official, however, one might reasonably expect a bit of give from Apple on this point, since they have taken such great measures to prevent such actions. But I’m pretty sure that apart from a little lip service, Apple will continue with the exact same policies, with the sort of blithe arrogance that simultaneously compels and repels consumers.

Apple launching new Mac Pros, speedbumped iMac, new Cinema Display and maybe the Magic Trackpad Tuesday?

Sure, we've been hearing whispers that Apple's got a new Mac Pros and some updated iMacs waiting in the wings, but our friend John Gruber at Daring Fireball seems just a mite more confident about things -- in a post trumpeting the return of his podcast The Talk Show, John coyly says tomorrow "might hypothetically" bring new Mac Pros, speedbumped iMacs (we'd guess the Core i3 will make its OS X debut), and a new 27-inch 16:9 Cinema Display will all arrive tomorrow. John also says the Magic Trackpad might also arrive tomorrow, but he's calling that one a "double-hypothetical," so who knows -- we'd think anything more serious than hardware refreshes would warrant a Jobs introduction, but hey, maybe Steve's all talked out for the month. We'll see what happens -- stay tuned.

Acer's Android-powered Stream confirmed for Expansys-exclusive August 9th launch

Acer's Android-powered Stream phone already got official way back in May -- and we got our hands on it at Computex in June -- but the company has only just now confirmed a launch date. According to Acer, the Stream will be rolling out on August 9th, and it'll be exclusive to UK-based online retailer Expansys, at least initially. As for the phone itself, you can expect a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 3.7-inch AMOLED screen, Android 2.1 for an OS, a 5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording (no flash, though), an HDMI out port, and full DLNA / UPnP support for media streaming (hence the name). Of course, being exclusive to Expansys also means you won't be getting a subsidized price -- look for this one to set you back £399, or just over $600. Video's after the break.
