Let’s be honest, you don’t need a reminder. You’ve had this date circled on your calendar for weeks… and rightly so. Today, both T-Mobile and Verizon will release what is sure to be known as their flagship Android handset. T-Mobile is releasing the Samsung Vibrant — their version of the Samsung Galaxy S — for $199 on contract. The Vibrant comes with a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor, Super AMOLED display, 5 megapixel camera, and Android 2.1. Verizon is offering the Motorola DROID X — also for $199 on contract — which packs a 4.3″ display, 1 GHZ Texas Instruments OMAP3630 processor, 8 megapixel mechanical shutter camera, and Android 2.1. Tis’ a great day for Android fanatics. Do let us know if you pick one of the new handsets up!

Changewave’s latest smartphone survey results are out and the compiled data confirms what most tech savvy people know: Apple and HTC are on the rise while Motorola, RIM, and Palm are on the decline. The survey queried over 4,000 consumers and questioned them about their future smartphone buying habits. Not surprisingly, the survey revealed that Apple is a driving force in the smartphone market with more than half (52%) of the respondents indicating that they would be purchasing an Apple iPhone as their next smartphone. HTC came in a distant second with 19% showing interest in HTC smartphone offerings. HTC was followed by Motorola (9%), RIM (6%), and sadly Palm (0%).
Looking historically, the survey reveals that Apple and HTC are the only two manufacturers which are generating increased interest in their handsets. Interest in Apple has skyrocketed from 31% to 52% due to the hype surrounding the iPhone 4 launch; while HTC has been propelled upward from 12% to 19% due to the interest in the EVO 4G and the Droid Incredible. Motorola, RIM, and Palm all show a decline as none of those three manufacturers released a new handset in months between March and June 2010. With the myriad of problems affecting the iPhone 4, the low inventory of HTC’s android offerings, and the launch of the Motorola Droid X, it will interesting to see how these figures shape up in the next survey.

Although nothing official has come from HP on this front, we got some pretty solid word back in April that the American giant was mulling an Android tablet. As it turns out, what with the WebOS acquisition that followed and HP's dogged commitment to Windows 7, that Googly project has apparently slipped out of the limelight in HP HQ. Word from All Things Digital is that there'll be nothing forthcoming this year (as was tentatively expected) and if an HP Android tablet is to materialize, it'll have to come in 2011. The company seems to be in the midst of reallocating resources to its higher priority projects, and who knows, should that rumored Hurricane tablet blow us all away, Android might never gets its chance to shine at all.

It was only a matter of time before some enterprising (or bored) sound engineer came up with the idea of combining the Mel Gibson threats against his ex-girlfriend with the Christain Bale movie set rant from a few years back. Together, they make for a hilarious phone fight that will go down as one of the most foul-mouthed two minutes and eleven seconds in online history….

Joey Yung's 3D MV (Disfigured) held its premiere yesterday. She is the first Hong Kong artist to film a MV in 3D. She joked that the MV production costs were a few 100 million. Although she's not sure of the actual production costs, she believes it is quite an investment. It was rumored that her contract with EEG ending soon, so EEG is investing greatly on her new MV, do they want her to renew the contract? Joey said: "EEG has always treated me well. Since I debuted, EEG gave me everything I have. Every time I release an album, there is always a fresh new feeling with good ideas. No one came to discuss contract renewal with me because my contract is not up yet. Even if my contract is ending, there is no discussion needed, it will automatically take effect. Bottom line is the day I'm still singing, I won't consider other companies."
Not measuring with money
If other companies use a high price to pull her over, she won't do it? Joe said: "For the mean time, I won't consider nor are there any companies who have contacted me. EEG and I have a good relationship, it is not measured by money. How EEG supported me, I should actually pay money back to them." It was rumored that EEG gave her a HK$40 million necklace as a reward for her staying with them and said that she wanted Vincy Chan out as one of the contract renewal conditions? Joey denied to all the rumors, she said: "I have never received such expensive necklace, such beautiful necklace I don't have a chance to wear. If EEG really wants to give me something, why not fulfill my greatest wish and promote cultural purposes."

Yeah, we said trailer. The Droid family has seen its fair share of atypical ads, and while this one won't tug on your heartstrings, it'll definitely captivate. Unless you're already three sheets to the wind and well on your way into an early weekend. Either way, you should really have a look after the break.

HP and Dell continue to dominate the landscape with 25.7% and 24% market shares, respectively, while Acer, Apple, and Toshiba round off the Top Five.
Apple claimed an 8.8% share this quarter, just above Toshiba's 8.5%, while Acer dropped from 12.3% to 11% this spring, narrowing the gap between third and fourth place. It looks like the iPad (which, as a tablet, was not included in these results) might be squeezing in on Acer's would be netbook buyers. Better get that tablet out soon and get in on the action, Acer.
Overall, US computer shipments were up a not-very-exciting (and not very surprising) 12.4%, while worldwide computer shipments rose 22.4%.

The Sony Defense Force has reason to celebrate today, as the circle is now complete -- where Netflix HD once spited PS3 for Xbox 360, today Hulu Plus has chosen the PlayStation for limited console exclusivity through the end of the year. Today, "a select group" of PlayStation Plus subscribers can download the Hulu Plus app and start watching immediately, while regular ol' paying members can ask nicely (via the same app) and wait patiently for the privilege of shelling out an additional $10 a month. Those who aren't dropping $50 a year on PlayStation Plus aren't entirely out of luck, they'll just have to wait till the end of the preview period to get their Hulu on.

Per usual, it seems as if this deal has happened in the dark of the night, but thankfully for the curious among us, it's a bit difficult to disguise a caravan of humans escaping Québec and fleeing to Cupertino. According to a report in The Sun as well as an independent confirmation on our end, Apple has picked up a small Canadian firm by the name of Poly9. As of now, every last employee has been relocated to California, with the couple who declined left to find other work in the Great White North. Poly9's official website is also blanked out, but in the past, the company has been credited with developing loads of web-based mapping programs (primarily in Flash, crazily enough) as well as APIs for a handful of monolithic clients like Microsoft, Yahoo!, NORAD and MSNBC. Generally speaking, Apple tends to integrate its purchases into the workflow at a rather rapid clip, so we're actually expecting something to come of this in the not-too-distant future. What, exactly, remains to be seen.

Right now, Intel has every right to lay contentedly atop the laurels of its biggest quarterly profit ever, but that's not what the company is doing at all. Instead of protracting the life of its current-gen processors unduly, Intel is planning to accelerate the roadmap for its next generation of multicore parts, codenamed Sandy Bridge. The difference between the Nehalem-based stuff we have today and the upcoming chip is that the Sandy Bridge architecture takes everything down to 32nm -- including the graphics processor and memory controller which are built at 45nm at present -- while keeping it all within the same enclosure. Enthusiastic feedback from customers who were given tasters of the Sandy stuff has been to blame for this haste on Intel's part, and we're told that with additional investment in 32nm infrastructure, the chip giant plans to make deliveries late this year. That in turn could potentially result in some eager vendor pushing a Sandy Bridge laptop or desktop out before 2010 is through -- which would be all kinds of nice.
