'Shutter Island' is weekend No. 1: $40.2M

Leonardo DiCaprio lost his crown this year as box-office king of the world. But he rebounded nicely this weekend with the biggest opener of his career.

Shutter Island dominated the competition with an estimated $40.2 million Friday-Sunday, a bigger haul than DiCaprio's last two movies made during their respective domestic runs.

Meanwhile, Avatar, the movie that trumped DiCaprio's Titanic, celebrated its 10th weekend by moving up to third place, scoring another $16.1 million—and putting itself days away from an unprecedented $700 million domestic gross. More good stuff:

The Hurt Locker Schools An Education, Avatar at Brit-Snubbing BAFTAs

Let's just say the Avatar braintrust may be blue in more than appearance. While James Cameron's crew spent this awards season as the kings of the world, they apparently couldn't hold a candle to the queen—it was Kathryn Bigelow and The Hurt Locker which bested all comers, taking home a leading six BAFTA awards, including Best Film and Director on Sunday.

"I would like to dedicate this to the cause of never abandoning the hunt to find a resolution for peace," said an emotional Bigelow.

Cameron's epic adventure in motion capture ended up losing most, but not all, of its awards season momentum, taking home just two technical prizes at the Orange British Academy Film Awards.

The leading and supporting acting awards went to, respectively, A Single Man's Colin Firth (somewhere Jeff Bridges has broken into a sweat), An Education's Carey Mulligan, Inglourious Basterds' Christoph Waltz and Precious' Mo'Nique.

Keep taking the Tablets

Like the charming, fey uncle your grandmother warned you against showering with, Apple’s iPad has us confused. Tablets have broached the mainstream and, like CES 2010 last month, this past week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona saw several more companies show their hand. Each of the chipset companies we spoke to – Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, Freescale, Marvell and others – included tablets among the target market for their ARM-based wares, and we played with various concepts, prototypes and mockups, many of which are destined for release within the next twelve months.

Of course, tablets are not a new invention, and you could forgive those people who have been carrying the pen-computing banner since Windows XP Tablet Edition (and before) for harbouring a little resentment at all this late-to-the-party interest. When Steve Jobs produced the iPad-tailored version of iWork with a flourish, and declared the suite an “amazing”, “extraordinary”, “tremendous” new way to work on a mobile touchscreen device, it’s hard not to imagine the frustration over at Microsoft; after all, tablets running their OSes have had access not just to shaved-down demi-versions of Office, but to the full apps.

Next iPhone OS to include video chat support?

Apple blog 9to5Mac has been doing some investigative work inside the the new iPhone SDK, and they’ve come up with a few interesting files. Located in TelephonyUI.framework are several resources that seem to indicate the inclusion of video chat functionality in future iPhones. Two PNG button files, one to accept a video call and one to reject it, and a call to these buttons in the TelephonyUI binary make excellent fodder for video chat rumors. Is Apple going to be including video chat in the next iPhone? We hope so… a front facing camera would also be appreciated.

Renowned comedy film-maker Stephen Chow will begin shooting his new film "Tai Chi" which features prominent Hollywood stars Jack Black and Anne Hathaway in the United States in June this year, said Hong Kong media reports.

The film will be Chow's directorial and acting debut in Tinseltown.

"Tai Chi", a co-production between China Film Group Corporation and an unnamed American film company will cost US$60 million (S$84.4 million) to make.

Yesterday on 8th day of CNY, Joey Yung held the autograph session for her postcard charity. She expressed that her goal is to raise 200,000 HKD funds for the charity, the most exciting part of this is that she's able to release an album and do charity at the same time. This is her second autograph session for her latest EP, on Feb 28th she will be holding her third one. She said: "It is the most autograph sessions I've head in history. (Taking a break after all the promotions?) Nope, I already took a 3 day break which is also the most time off I had in history!"

Although she is currently busy shooting for a new film, the other night Joey and a male companion went to support Taiwanese singer Crowd Lu's concert. Joey exposed: "The girl sitting next to my male friend is his girlfriend, those two are my 'concert legs', not everyone wants to accompany me to watch a concert! You all misunderstood that I got rice (boyfriend)? No... you all misunderstood, luckily I clarified fast enough." She smiled and said that currently there is no "rice" that she can develop with. The day before there was a friend who SMS her telling her that he got a nightmare of dating her.

Google Does Not Make People Stupid, Internet Experts Suggest

Google doesn’t make people stupid, a survey of Internet experts by the Pew Internet & American Life Project and Elon University seemed to suggest. Some 76 percent of those polled believed the Internet will eventually allow people to become smarter and make better choices, while 21 percent thought that Internet use could potentially start driving down people’s IQs by 2020. In written comments accompanying the survey, those experts debated both sides of the Google-equals-stupidity argument.

Does Google make people stupider?

That was the question that the Pew Internet & American Life Project, in conjunction with Elon University’s Imagining the Internet Center, asked a group of Internet “experts,” who largely concluded that the popular search engine does not, in fact, make people stupid.

Some 76 percent of the 895 experts polled for the study believed that, by 2020, people’s use of the Internet and its access to massive amounts of information will allow them to “become smarter and make better choices…Google does not make us stupid.”

Andy Lau's Hollywood encounter

Long before Jackie Chan and Jet Li ventured into Hollywood, Hong Kong star Andy Lau had had the chance, reported Sina.com.cn.

The Heavenly King revealed that he signed with a Hollywood agency in 1992.

"I was a Hollywood star earlier than Jackie Chan and Jet Li. For three years, I flew to America every three months to look at movie scripts."

Apparently, no script caught his fancy throughout the years.

"I was told very clearly that even in the next10 years, there would be no more than five scripts that are about Chinese. One of the better scripts I've seen is Year of the Dragon (1985), which starred John Lone.

"I've not signed with a Hollywood agency after that. What I'm looking for is something that I enjoy doing and hopefully, manage to impress others, instead of following the trend of going Hollywood. It's not really a big deal to go Hollywood," he concluded.
