Aaron Kelly gets expelled from ‘Idol’

17-year-old struggled with Sinatra tune; Big Mike also in the bottom two

The “American Idol” quest for the tween audience suffered a couple of crippling blows this week. The first was the Frank Sinatra theme that forced the remaining five finalists to sing tunes that were old when their parents were young, and the second was that Aaron Kelly got voted off the show on Wednesday.

(Well, there was also the little matter of the not one but two group sings during the results show. But that offended audience members of all age groups and wasn’t tween specific.)

Kelly was by far the youngest contestant remaining among the final five. Though he claims to be 17 years old, it’s a little surprising that the birther movement didn’t demand he produce his own certificate to prove it, since he looked like someone who gets turned away from PG-13 movies if he shows up without a parent or guardian.

Billboard Magazine “The All-Time Most Successful ‘American Idols’”

As fans soldier toward the end of The Simon Cowell Era of American Idol, Music Bible Billboard Magazine has compiled a list of the 24 most successful artists who have kickstarted their careers on the FOX talent series — and some of the rankings may surprise you.

Based on a combination of album sales, track sales, and radio spins, the publication has named original Idol Kelly Clarkson the franchise’s most successful. The “Since You’ve Been Gone” powerhouse has moved 10.6 million albums, garnered 15.9 million track sales, and earned more than 4.2 million radio plays since tasting victory on Idol in 2002.

Michelle McGee: I Had Sex With Jesse James Out of "Boredom"

Why did Michelle McGee carry on an 11-month affair with Sandra Bullock's husband Jesse James?

"Boredom," McGee claimed Wednesday on Howard Stern's Sirius XM radio show. "Had nothing better to do."

"It was a sexual thing," the tattooed model and stripper explained. "I also wished it was a relationship -- but I wasn't in love with him."

After James sent McGee a message on MySpace, the pair hooked up -- and watched TV -- in the office of his motorcycle shop. The illicit lovers had sex "two to three, four times a night, two times a week," often on James' coffin-shaped couch, she told an incredulous Stern. McGee "never saw" the Seal Beach, Calif. home James shared with Bullock, his wife of nearly five years.

McGee wouldn't confirm whether James wore a condom during their trysts. "That's just too personal," she explained to Stern. "I was on birth control pills, so I wasn't afraid of getting pregnant."

Microsoft Kin network pricing is youth extortion: $85 a month

The Microsoft KIN devices are aimed at students and the younger user in particular, to take control of their online lives and stand out from the crowd as part of the cool-kid collective.

As I strongly suspected, the pricing issue and the potential for an inability for networks to play ball has indeed arisen, meaning while the device itself may be relatively cheap, the network costs for the full package will be extortionate.

Microsoft refreshes IE9 preview, boosts speed

Claims faster JavaScript, higher Acid3 test scores, but offers no beta date

Making good on a promise two months ago, Microsoft today updated its Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) preview, a sneak peek that targets Web developers and others eager to try out the company's next browser.

"The Platform Preview continues to be the thinnest possible wrapper around the Web platform, and as such is not intended for general purpose browsing," cautioned Dean Hachamovich, the browser team's general manager, in an entry on the IE blog today.

In mid-March, Microsoft committed to updating the IE9 preview every eight weeks until it issues a public beta. The company again declined to reveal its timeline plans for a beta or a final of the next-generation browser.

Upon knowing that her new co-star would be Wu Zun, Rainie admitted that she had been looking forward to working with him for a long time, but her first reaction was: “I’m dead! Upcoming iPhone to record video at 720p HD?

While some are exploring the outward functionality of the latest beta of iPhone OS 4, others are slowly picking apart the underlying architecture and mining clues about the potential hardware and functionality of the upcoming iPhone. The most recent discovery teases us with 720p HD recording which is revealed in the following two video presets:

AVCaptureSessionPreset640×480
AVCaptureSessionPreset1280×720

The secondary value is the familiar resolution for 720p HD and is a feature that would fit in nicely with the rumored iPhone HD name. Anyone excited by the potential of HD recording and a new naming convention for the upcoming iPhone?

Sprint’s new HTC EVO 4G video teaser shows a bulky, undesirable smartphone

The HTC EVO 4G is not only a high-end handset, but also a quite nice-looking one. Well, Sprint’s newest official video preview of the EVO seems to forget that the real handset looks good, and presents us a really ugly and fat device.

Of course, someone screwed up something when editing the video, but I really don’t understand why Sprint published it, when they could have just remade it, and only then show it to the world.

Kim Kardashian is a Talentless Fame Whore!

The latest issue of In Touch Weekly features a cover story that says Kim Kardashian is a talentless fame whore. Which raises an obvious question:

How is this news?

Speaking to the tabloid, Kim's ex-husband has harsh words for the woman he was married to from 2000-2004. He says the reality star is "obsessed with fame" and "jealous and competitive with her sisters."

“She can’t write or sing or dance, so she does harmful things in order to validate herself in the media,” Thomas says. “That’s a fame whore to me. It’s just not cool at all.”

We actually find it very cool. Kim's desperate ways allow us to mock her and criticize her on an almost-daily basis. We also get to see her naked sometimes.

Late last month, another report targeted Thomas and accused him of beating Kim. He says this claim is "absolutely not true" and Kim made up the allegations to get “a lot of money” out of him.

“Lost” Finale Will Run 150 Minutes

The series finale of Lost is bravely going where no television farewell has gone before — 150 minutes.

Have you started planning your Lost finale party yet? You may want to stock up on extra pretzels and potato chips, because the May 23 event just grew an extra half hour.

According to a scoop from The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday, the final episode of Lost will now run a full two and a half hours: “The producers of ABC’s hit drama have shot so much crucial material for the show’s hugely anticipated series finale that the network has agreed to extend the last episode by an extra half hour. When the “Lost” finale airs on Sunday, May 23rd, the episode will run from 9 to 11:30 p.m…”

ClamCase Turns Your iPad Into A Laptop

The ClamCase concept is advertised as an "all-in-one keyboard, case and stand for the iPad," but what really matters is that it lets you turn your iPad into a decent-looking pretend laptop.

The keyboard connects to your iPad via Bluetooth and the whole setup means that you can once again look like an ordinary laptop user in coffee shops—albeit tapping the screen will give you away.

An eyeful of Adobe's Android / Tegra prototype tablet running Air

After getting a pretty great glimpse of Adobe's Tegra 2- and Android-powered prototype tablet yesterday, we decided to head over to the Web 2.0 Expo show floor ourselves to get some first-hand impressions. Unfortunately, the company couldn't get a single website to open (Flash-based or otherwise) given lackluster WiFi, leaving us with only a tease of its power via an Air-based slideshow. To drive home what we heard yesterday, this prototype isn't being prepped for release at any point in the future -- more so, this is to serve as a showcase for the future potential of Adobe on Tegra 2 tablets. We'll stop by again tomorrow morning and hope the show floor's connection will be better by then, but in the meantime, enjoy the smattering of pictures and video we managed to get this afternoon.

Charlene Choi’s Multi-Million Dollar Worth

Gillian Chung and Joey Yung Cho Yi each recently purchased $27 million (HKD) homes at “Harbour One,” a new luxury apartment building complex developed by the Emperor Group. Why did Charlene Choi not purchase a home within the same building? Charlene explained, “I am currently helping my mother purchase a property. But she is very picky.”

At a promotional event yesterday, Charlene revealed that she is currently collecting rent from five properties. Her mother is a religious follower of Feng Shui practices. Thus the Choi family’s property purchase criteria is very selective.

After Gillian’s comeback to the entertainment industry, it was rumored that she already made $10 million (HKD) in one year. Did Charlene earn even more money than Gillian? Charlene said, “No, I have to pay mortgage payments. Thus, if an apartment is very expensive, I will not buy it.”

Verizon customers lust for iPhone, says survey

Pent-up demand will add millions more iPhones in 2011, analyst says

Verizon subscribers would jump at the chance to have an iPhone, with more than half of those surveyed saying they would likely switch to an Apple handset, a recently-released poll said.

Saying that there is "an unprecedented level of pent-up demand for the iPhone among Verizon subscribers," Rockville, Md.-based market research firm ChangeWave said its survey of more than 4,000 consumers pegged Verizon as the U.S. carrier most likely to reap massive rewards if Apple opens up the iPhone to other providers.

Mozilla's 'Lorentz,' 'Lanikai' edge closer to release

Web browsing and e-mailing from Mozilla got a bit of a bump forward on Wednesday, as the company updated its beta test builds of Firefox 3.6.4 and Thunderbird 3.1, respectively code-named Lorentz and Lanikai.

Firefox 3.6.4 beta 3, for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and Thunderbird 3.1 beta 2, for Windows, Mac, and Linux, offer the latest features from Mozilla but are also less stable than the current releases.

When pushed out to all users, Firefox 3.6.4 will incorporate the much-anticipated Out-Of-Process-Plug-in feature, which prevents plug-in crashes from Adobe Systems' Flash, Apple's QuickTime, and Microsoft's Silverlight from bringing down the entire browser. You can read the change log here, but the gist of it is that Firefox 3.6.4 beta 3 continues to fix bugs related to OOPPs (out-of-process plug-ins), including about a dozen marked critical.

Survey says: most teens don't have a data plan, almost all send texts

Microsoft and Verizon might think all the kids want to do with their new Kin phones is pay absurd data rates for a half-baked Twitter experience, but it turns out Generation Upload is still actually just Generation Text Message. That's at least the word according to a Pew Internet Research survey published on April 20th and neatly summed up by a new Flowlogic infographic published today -- only 23 percent of American teenagers with cellphones use social networks with their phones, while 72 percent of all teens use text messaging. You might argue that Kin seeks to flip that balance, but Pew found that 63 percent of teens with cell phones don't have data plans and the vast majority of teen cellphone plans are part of a larger family plan, so the Kin's $30 / month data rate might be a hard sell to Mom and Dad.

Court fight brews over unsealing iPhone records

An attorney for the 21-year-old Silicon Valley resident who found what appears to be Apple's prototype iPhone in a bar is expected to oppose a request by CNET and other media organizations to unseal court records relating to the investigation.

A coalition also including the Associated Press, Bloomberg News, the Los Angeles Times, and Wired.com has prepared a 7-page legal brief that will ask a court to unseal the detective's affidavit used to obtain a search warrant nearly two weeks ago. A hearing has been tentatively scheduled in the San Mateo County courthouse for 2 p.m. PDT on Thursday.

Jeff Bornstein, a criminal defense lawyer at K&L Gates in San Francisco who is representing Brian Hogan, has indicated that he will oppose the request to open records, although it wasn't clear why or on what grounds. San Mateo County prosecutors have persuaded a judge to seal all the records of the case, and that order itself also appears to be secret.

Bieber, 16, is shocked. "Seriously?" he responded.

Microsoft Kin launch May 6th for under $100 on contract

That rumor about the launch date of Verizon’s Kin One and Kin Two was almost exact: the new Microsoft phones will be available online at Verizon starting May 6. The devices will also be available in the carrier’s stores across the US, but only starting May 13.

Microsoft has confirmed these launch dates. Moreover, the company has also announced the handsets’ prices: the Kin One costs $49.99, while the Kin Two will be $99.99. Both prices are after $100 rebates with a 2-yr Verizon contract agreement, requiring a $40 voice plan and $30 data plan (a total of $70 per month).

HP Windows 7 Tablet mystery continues

Speculation around HP’s tablet continues, with the company still yet to step up and confirm whether or not the project has been canned. After a report last week suggested that the Windows 7 slate had been axed shortly after HP’s acquisition of Palm, followed by a contrary report supposedly from a source within HP, the Mercury News is quoting analyst Ezra Gottheil who still expects the tablet to see a commercial launch.

According to Gottheil, “HP has no problem putting out multiple products, some people have even criticized them for putting out too many products. I can’t see them killing one just because another is coming up.” It’s unclear whether the analyst’s opinion is founded on speculation or some insider information he’s unable to detail at this point.

Mandarin Films Distribution, the film company behind the immensely popular martial arts films "Ip Man" and its sequel "Ip Man 2", has said through a spokesperson that discussions are underway to shoot "Ip Man 3" with singer Jay Chou and Donnie Yen.

"The company would love to shoot 'Ip Man 3' with the original cast and crew. However, we will have to discuss the collaborative details with producer Raymond Wong to understand the situation, and if Jay Chou and Donnie Yen's names come up during our discussions, it would be the perfect team," said the spokesperson.

Summer's Desire poster up for vote

Current leader: The deep ocean

FTV and GTV's Summer's Desire 泡沫之夏, set to air at the end of this month, caught three A-listers: Da S, Huang Xiao Ming, and Peter Ho. So, who should be the main focus on the official poster?

GTV had originally designed three different posters, one of which gives 1/3 of the poster to each of the three stars, where Huang Xiao Ming is at the top, and which Huang Xiao Ming liked the most. However, when this poster was released online on the yam website, it was immediately attacked for plagiarizing the poster of Autumn's Concerto.

Lea Michele Diva Behavior Make Snobby Star “Disliked” On Set Of “Glee”

She’s a Broadway darling whose big voice and headturning beauty have made her the breakout star of FOX’s musical comedy Glee – but devoted Gleeks may be disappointed to learn that series stunner Lea Michele stands accused of being “difficult” to work with by on set informants.

Heat Magazine — a European doppleganger for The National Enquirer — asserts that the actress, who plays Rachel on the show, is universally “disliked” by the cast and crew of Glee and harbors a ugly history of being mean-spirited that dates back to her high school days.

Expanded Sync

Android 2.1 coming to Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro in Q4

One of the downsides of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 family is that all three handsets included in it (X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro) run Android 1.6, although Android 2.1 has been launched for quite a while now.

Well, the old OS will no longer be a problem later this year, as Sony Ericsson has just announced that the Xperia X10 phones would all be updated to Android 2.1 in the fourth quarter.

The three handsets use Sony Ericsson’s customized UXP (UX platform) on top of Android, and probably that’s why it takes so long for the company to upgrade them to the latest version of the OS.

4 songs from Gummy’s new album competing for #1 spot on different music charts

Singer Gummy has been given the green lights for her new album ‘Loveless’ released after 2 years.

The title song ‘As A Man’ is up #1 on Mnet chart and also moving up other music charts fast. But what is special this time is that the popular songs from Gummy’s album ‘Loveless’ is different on different music sites.

Currently the title song ‘As A Man’ is up #1 on Mnet and Dosirak. ‘Because Of You’ is doing well at #2 on Cyworld, and ‘There is no Love’ is up #10 on Melon. At the same time the song ‘What to do” is also doing very well up on charts. With that, it seems that 4 songs out of the album are all competing with one another on various charts.

Jessica Hsuan Portrays Villianess in “Sisters of Pearl”

The entertaining value of a television series is usually attributed to the villain’s role. In recent years, TVB created several memorable villainess roles, such as Tavia Yeung Yi’s character in Beyond the Realm of Conscience <宮心計> and Michelle Yim Mai Shuet in Moonlight Resonance <溏心風暴之家好月圓>.

Replacing Suspects in Love’s <搜下留情> time slot will be Sisters of Pearl <掌上明珠> For the first time in her 17-year acting career, Jessica Hsuan will be portraying a villainess. Sisters of Pearl also feature Bowie Lam, Kiki Sheung Tin Gnor, Michael Tao Dai Yu, Chan Mei Si, and Joyce Tang Lai Ming. Set in the 1960s, the story revolves around the three Chu sisters (played by Kiki, Jessica, and Mei Si) and their family pearl business. Due to the frequent bickering among the sisters over the family fortune, there will be many scenes with the female characters plotting against each other.

Kendra Wilkinson Sex Tape Scandal: Concocted by Kendra Wilkinson

Let us be clear: there is no Kendra Wilkinson sex tape.

We make a living exploring the world of celebrity gossip. We forced our interns to work overtime last night, phoning sources and surfing every site on the Internet: nothing.

But that hasn't stopped this troubled young woman from spreading her own sex tape rumors, as OK! Weekly has apparently run out of weight loss stories to BS for their readers.

Instead, this week's issue plasters Kendra's worried face on its cover and screams about her SEX TAPE SCANDAL.

The feature article goes on to claim that "a salacious sex tape" is set to go public, unless Wilkinson can take legal action to stop it.

Heidi Montag Will Enlarge Breasts Again

It seems Heidi Montag's 13 plastic surgeries weren't enough, after all -- Spencer Pratt says his wife wants to enlarge her breasts again, the new issue of Life & Style reveals.

"She wants to do it within the next two months and film it for the new TV show she and Spencer have been pitching to cable networks E! and Oxygen," an insider tells the magazine. "She feels forced into it, because she didn't get what she wanted last time. She's not going to be satisfied until they're bigger."

The kicker? "Heidi's purportedly looking to have the surgery done in Europe rather than by an American-board-certified doctor," the mag reports.

"When Heidi woke up from the anesthesia [last time], she was angry [her breasts] weren't bigger. She said she wanted to punch the doctor in the face," Spencer tells Life & Style. "I try to stop her. She'll do what she wants with her body."

According to Spencer, an April 5 visit to Ryan Seacrest's radio show pushed Heidi over the edge:

Tang Wei rumoured to play Teresa Teng in Lee Ang film

Chinese actress Tang Wei is rumoured to play the late Teresa Teng in Lee Ang's upcoming film about the Taiwanese songstress, reported Chinese media.

After much hard work, Lee managed to gain approval from Teng's family for his proposed film which will star Tang as the late singer.

Tang, whom Lee previously directed in the hit film "Lust Caution", was reportedly chosen for the part because both she and Teng shared similar facial features and temperaments.

Teng's family members were said to have signed an agreement with investment firm Polybona to work on the film, with Lee as the director.

Lee has also expressed interest in taking on the project but had a full schedule for the next six months, so Polybona decided to push back the film in order to accommodate his schedule and reunite Lee with Tang.

Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch: We’re Going To Make The Best Tools In The World For HTML5

One of of today’s keynote speakers at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco is Adobe exec Kevin Lynch, who serves as the company’s CTO and SVP, Experience & Technology Organization. The keynote talk is a timely one — Adobe has been in the headlines over the last few weeks as it spars a public battle with Apple. Lynch sat down with Web 2.0 Expo SF program chair Brady Forrest. My live notes about the conversation are below.

Q: How is Adobe going to react to HTML5?

A: I wouldn’t say reacting to HTML5. We see whatever people are using to express themselves. … We’re going to make great tooling for HTML5. We’re going to make the best tools in the world for HTML 5.

We’re facing a time where there are some where you wnat to wall off parts of the web and need to have approval. I don’t think that’s the role of a company. Apple is playing this strategy where they want to create a walled garden. But look at the iPhone helicopter we just saw — why should I only be able to use an iPhone for that? Why can’t you do that with any phone? If you look at what’s going on now, it’s like railroads in the 1800′s. People were using different gauged rails. Your cars would literally not run on those rails. That’s counter to the web. The rails now are forcing people to write for a particular OS, which has a high cost to switch.

Media want Gizmodo court records in iPhone probe

The justifications police gave for searching the home of a Gizmodo editor in the criminal investigation of an iPhone prototype should be public, CNET is preparing to tell a judge this week.

A group that also includes the California-based First Amendment Coalition and prominent news organizations is drafting a legal brief that will ask a court to unseal the detective's affidavit used to obtain a search warrant nearly two weeks ago. San Mateo County prosecutors have persuaded a judge to seal all the records of the case.

Making those documents public could reveal whether prosecutors and Superior Court Judge Clifford Cretan considered whether journalist shield laws applied to the evening raid of Jason Chen's home last month and whether they viewed bloggers working for Nick Denton's Gawker Media as members of a legitimate media organization.

In general, searches of newsrooms are unlawful and can even result in police paying penalties in the form of damages to media organizations. A federal law called the Privacy Protection Act broadly immunizes news organizations from searches. A similar California law prevents judges from signing warrants that target writers for newspapers, magazines, or "other periodical publication"--a definition that a state appeals court has extended (PDF) to Apple bloggers.

B.o.B's 'Adventures' tops the 'Billboard' 200 albums chart

Riding the success of his smash “Nothin’ On You,” B.o.B’s The Adventures of Bobby Ray debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart this week. Selling 84,000 copies, it’s a low topper. But I’m sure B.o.B will happily take the crown anyway. The Atlanta native is the first solo male act to have a debut hit No. 1 since Rick Ross’ Port of Miami did so in August of 2006.

Lady Antebellum‘s Need You Now spends its fourteenth straight week in the top five and second in a row at No. 2, selling 76,000 copies. U.K. rock band Bullet for My Valentine‘s Fever sold 71,000 and debuted at No. 3. Justin Bieber‘s “My World 2.0″ falls one spot to No. 4 with 69,000. AC/DC’s soundtrack to Iron Man 2, which features their greatest hits, dropped one slot to No. 5 with 52,000. And Usher’s inner battle, Raymond v. Raymond , dropped from No. 5 to No. 6 with 48,000.

Counrty rock icon Melissa Etheridge’s Fearless Love debuts at No. 7 with 46,000. Actress and singer Miranda Cosgrove’s debut album Sparks Fly only flew to No. 8 with 36,000.

Now 33‘s compilation set comes in at No. 9 with 30,000. Glee‘s The Power of Madonna TV soundtrack fell to No. 10 with 29,000 units sold.

Sandra Bullock Taking Break From Acting

Sandra Bulllock is planning to take a break from acting to focus on raising her adopted son following her split from cheating husband Jesse James.

The actress — who won an Academy Award for her portrayal of an adoptive mom in the inspirational film The Blind Side — walked out on the TV mechanic after a tabloid cheating scandal made headlines in March.

She has filed for divorce and is planning to care for the former couple’s son Louis, who was adopted in January, on her own.

For Sandra, being a good mom means leaving the Hollywood limelight for a quiet existence with the new leading man in her life: “All I know is that I want to be able to enjoy being a mom. Doing all the things moms get to do, outside in the sun, in the world. The career will have to wait for a bit. I don’t want to step into that world until I can find out what room I left my armour in. You need tough skin to be in this business. I don’t have tough skin right now and I don’t want it.”

Country Star Chely Wright: "I Had a Gun in My Mouth"

Chely Wright made a pact with God when she was 9 years old: If he let her become a country music star, she wouldn't tell anyone she liked girls.

"I said I will always hide if you just give me music," Wright tells me. "I will go without love in my life. Just give me music."

Fast forward to today…

Wright, 39, has come out of the closet. She details her life—including a 10-year relationship with a woman that ended under the unbearable strain of keeping it a secret—in a new memoir, Like Me: Confessions of a Heartland Country Singer.

Back in the late 1990s, Wright became a household name among country music fans with hits like "Shut Up and Drive" and "Single White Female." The Academy of Country Music awarded her Top New Female Vocalist in 1995.
