Tang Wei rumoured to play Teresa Teng in Lee Ang film
Chinese actress Tang Wei is rumoured to play the late Teresa Teng in Lee Ang's upcoming film about the Taiwanese songstress, reported Chinese media.
After much hard work, Lee managed to gain approval from Teng's family for his proposed film which will star Tang as the late singer.
Tang, whom Lee previously directed in the hit film "Lust Caution", was reportedly chosen for the part because both she and Teng shared similar facial features and temperaments.
Teng's family members were said to have signed an agreement with investment firm Polybona to work on the film, with Lee as the director.
Lee has also expressed interest in taking on the project but had a full schedule for the next six months, so Polybona decided to push back the film in order to accommodate his schedule and reunite Lee with Tang.
Tang's management, on the other hand, denied that they were ever contacted by Teng's family regarding the film.
An asthmatic, Teng died after suffering a serious respiratory attack in 1995 while on holiday in Thailand and was given a state funeral in her native Taiwan.
May 8, 2010 will mark the 15th anniversary of Teng's passing.
Over the years, numerous film producers across Asia have tried and failed to get the Teng family's blessing for a movie on the late singer.
So far, only tributes to her memory, like Hong Kong director Peter Chan's film "Comrades, Almost a Love Story", which featured Teng's passing as a subplot, and Hong Kong singer Faye Wong's album that contained her renditions of Teng's songs, were endorsed by Teng's estate.
