'Book of Eli' beats 'Avatar' Friday

Boxoffice behemoth "Avatar" slipped from the top of the domestic rankings on its 29th day.

Warner Bros.-distributed Denzel Washington-starrer "The Book of Eli" -- produced and financed by Alcon Entertainment -- grabbed the top boxoffice rung in its first day of release with an estimated $11.7 million. But in all likelihood, "Avatar" still will claim weekend bragging rights for a rare fifth consecutive session.

Nielsen EDI considers the weekend a four-day frame, extending through the Martin Luther King holiday on Monday.

"Avatar" fetched $10.4 million in U.S. and Canadian coin on Friday to bring its cumulative domestic boxoffice to $460.9 million. That's just part of an even more impressive $1.43 billion worldwide tally for the 3D sci-fi epic.

Elsewhere among the daily rankings, Lionsgate's "The Spy Next Door," starring Jackie Chan, bowed softly with $2.4 million in sixth place. But the family actioner should register more robust b.o. when weekend matinees kick in.

Par's Peter Jackson-helmed "The Lovely Bones" rung up $5.7 million in third place, after expanding from limited to wide release on Friday. Cume for the literary adaptation hit $6.2 million.

Soph-session holdovers "Daybreakers" from Lionsgate and "Leap Year" from Universal grossed $1.8 million and $1.5 million Friday, respectively, to land in the eighth and 10th positions on the day. "Daybreakers" totes a $20.7 million cume and "Leap Year" reached $13.5 million.

Another second-weekend title -- Dimension Films' youth comedy "Youth in Revolt" -- fell from the top rankings, with just under $1 million in Friday b.o. yielding an eight-day cume of $10 million

Comeback for full weekend box office tomorrow.
