Did Katy Perry Really Just Diss Lady Gaga?

Here are the rules of music video production according to Katy Perry: faux-lesbianism, not a problem. But whatever you do, don't bring religion into it!

Sadly (for her), not all of her fellow artists are onboard, as evidenced by Lady Gaga's newest video, "Alejandro," which came out this week.

Apparently, Ms. Perry was none too impressed by some of the video's imagery. Well, not everyone can rise to the subtle and nuance-heavy creative bar set by a cupcake bra that squirts frosting.

"Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke," Perry tweeted yesterday.

While Perry didn't directly mention the video or Lady Gaga by name, the consensus is pretty unanimous as to what she was critiquing.

Of course, both sides come with their baggage—Perry launched her career in Christian music and both her parents are pastors, while Gaga was also raised Catholic and attended a religious school.

But the similarities more or less end there: while the newly released teaser for Perry's "California Gurls" video is airy, light, oversaturated with color and, let's be honest, come the end of summer fairly disposable, Gaga's "Alejandro" is epic, bleak, thought-provoking and sure to be dissected and analyzed long after the seasons change.

But while Gaga certainly makes liberal use of religious imagery in her video, she doesn't exactly blaspheme: she references Madonna circa "Like a Prayer," dons a red latex nun's habit, sucks on a rosary, sings in front of a crucifix and wears a red cross on her Lady bits. You know, the usual.

Still, Katy's more than entitled to her opinion…but she may want to rethink the second half of her diss…the one about fart jokes being cheap. After all, it was only yesterday fiancĂ© Russell Brand gifted the comedy world with this gem:

"That woman is like a flatulence factory. The pop hits that she fires out of her mouth are nothing compared to what comes out the other end of her!"

Isn't it nice when things come full circle?
