Always on stage... Taylor Swift stays in performance mode even on the beach

Country music ingénue Taylor Swift has been a regular on the awards show circuit - as a performer and a recipient of numerous awards.

But it seems that even while enjoying some downtime in Melbourne, Australia, the 19-year-old singer couldn't quite stop herself from slipping into performance mode.

Taylor and her friends descended on St Kilda beach and seemed to be in high spirits as they ran into the ocean, singing and waving their arms in the air.

Dressed in a purple minidress, Taylor, led her friends in an impromptu performance - perhaps of one of her five hit songs.

The singer is in the city to perform at the Rod Laver Arena, and will also perform in Adelaide.

The singer recently won four Grammys, including swiping the most prestigious Grammy award - best album - from under the nose of the night's biggest winner Beyoncé.

But her win and an off-par live performance with veteran Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks was roundly criticised.

The New York Times called her 'painfully out of tune', which signalled the start of a backlash around the young singer's surprise win.

Taylor's label boss Scott Borchetta, rushed to her defence blaming a technical problem for the below-par performance.

As did country music veteran Naomi Judd who attributed the less-than-perfect Grammy duet to an 'off night'.

'Having sung many times at the Grammys, I can tell you that the stress and anxiety of performing in front of the world's top artists in every genre of music is tortuous for even the most seasoned singer.'

And Judd praised Taylor's 'smarts, manners and class' as qualities young people should admire and emulate.

She added: 'If there's an award for being the best role model for her generation...I'd like to be the one to give it to Taylor Swift.'

Taylor's rise to chart dominance has been something of a fairytale.

The former straight A student is the first female solo artist in the 44-year history of the US Billboard Country Chart to score five Top 10 singles from her 2006 debut album, Taylor Swift.

She is also the first female artist in history to write or co-write every song on that same triple-platinum-selling debut album.
