Have the Pussycat Dolls split? Mystery surrounds future of girl group amidst rumours of tension

The future of The Pussycat Dolls is in doubt following reports the girl group have split.

The five-piece, fronted by Nicole Scherzinger, has been dogged by rumours this year they were planning to go their separate ways after completing their world tour in July.

The remaining four bandmembers Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta, Melody Thornton and Melody Thornton are said to have fallen out with lead singer Scherzinger.

A source told the New York Post: 'It is war. They have broken up for good. None of the other girls are speaking to Nicole, who they believe took the limelight, then went off to do her own thing.'

The group officially announced they were 'on a break' in September with each member focusing on solo projects.

The girl band's founder Robin Antin, who is releasing a Pussycat Dolls fitness DVD next month, denied rumours of turmoil amongst the bandmembers.

She said: 'The Pussycat Dolls are very much alive and there is no truth to the silent treatment statements.

'Nicole and the Dolls have always been close. Nicole is and always has been a strong creative force within this group and I cherish the way we collaborate.'

Before the Pussycat Dolls are launched as a pop group in 2005, Antin also started a burlesque dance troupe of the same name in 1995, which still exists and performs at venues across the U.S.

Antin fuelled rumours that the bandmembers may change when she said there had been many 'reincarnations' of the Dolls over the years.

In an interview with Popstar website, she said: 'It is a girl group so people are always saying they are going to break up, there are guys in the group that have a destiny in their mind of where they want to be and want to go.

'And I appreciate and respect them for that because they have been with us for a long time.

'The truth is I have had a lot of different girls in the Pussycat Dolls over the years which many people did not know before the band.

'I had many reincarnations of the PCD so if a couple of girls want to go out and do something else it is easy for me to find other girls.'

Aside from the group, the Pussycat Dolls is a brand name in its own right, with a lingerie and jewellery range to its name.

Scherzinger, who has been dating racing driver Lewis Hamilton since last year, has always been the main focus of the group and dominates the Dolls' videos.

During the summer, Wyatt admitted there was tension in the group over Scherzinger's prominent role.

She said: 'It's true, there has always been a lot of focus on Nicole which has been hard to deal with sometimes.

'This group was created with a foundation, they knew exactly what they wanted and they had Nicole as the focus. Every video and stage performance that we've done, Nicole has been our leader.

'I wasn't in videos like I wanted and wasn't seen in the way I was hoping, which has been the same for all the other girls too.

'I don't really make any of the decisions, I'm in the group and can voice my opinions to a degree but at the end of the day it is a business and there are a lot of chefs in the kitchen that run the Pussycat Dolls.'

Wyatt fuelled rumours that she may be replaced by new bandmembers when she described Pussycat Dolls as a 'brand'.

She said last month: 'I think that the Dolls was always created as a brand and will always be that way, kind of like a Broadway show. So no matter what happens, the Pussycat Dolls will always be around.

'There's nothing set in stone for the future of the Pussycat Dolls, so right now I've been working on my own thing, I'm in the studio, I'm writing, I'm making music.'

In July, the Dolls' spokesman was forced to deny claims they were splitting after Roberts was quoted to have said during a trip to London: 'This is the last time we'll be in the UK as a band. We've broken up.'

Rather tellingly, her bandmate Thornton recently changed her Twitter name from PCDMelodyT to simply MelodyThornton.

Writing on her Twitter micro-blogging page on Saturday, Thornton said: 'I asked a friend to pray for me moving forward in my life that I end up where I belong and reach my destiny instead and wanting me to remain "stuck".

'If you believe you will make it, you will. If you allow doubt your destiny will still be fulfilled but with setbacks. I don't have time for that.'

The group's last single release Hush Hush, Hush Hush was billed as from The Pussycat Dolls featuring Nicole Scherzinger, instead of the previous Pussycat Dolls, which had reportedly caused tension within the group.

It is believed Scherzinger is planning to leave the Pussycat Dolls to focus on her solo career and finally release her long-delayed debut album My Name Is Nicole.

Several songs from the album, which was originally scheduled for release two years ago, ended up on the Doll Domination album last year.

Thornton, who often has her own solo segment in the Dolls' previous singles, made her feelings known on stage in her native Phoenix, Arizona in April, when the group were supporting Britney Spears.

As each Doll introduced herself, Thornton said: 'I want to give a shout out to my family. Thank you for supporting me...even though I'm not featured.

'Don't give up on your dreams. Don't let anybody stop you - ever.'

After her on-stage outburst, she was given an enthusiastic high-five by redhead Sutta.

Ten years after Antin created the Dolls burlesque troupe, the pop group were launched in 2005 fronted by Scherzinger, who previously sang for US reality TV band Eden's Crush.

Originally created as a six piece, the oldest bandmember Carmit Bachar, 35, quit in March 2008 to focus on her solo career.

Their debut Don't Cha reached number one in the UK, German, Australian and Canadian singles charts.

They went on to achieve a total of two number ones and eight top 10 hits in the UK, as well as four top 10 hits in their native America.

The group also won three Billboard Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards and were nominated for a Grammy.
