Robert Pattinson is set to swing into action to replace Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 4, according to a report out of the UK. But the Twilight hunk will have some stiff competition from fellow young stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Zac Efron.Moviegoers were devastated when it was announced that former Spidey star Tobey Maguire, 34, would be hanging up his cape. Last week, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios said they will delay the fourth film in the hit superhero franchise by one year and return in 2012 with a new story, new director, and cast. A new prequel will see Peter Parker back in high school.
The Twilight hunk is reportedly the top choice of Columbia executives to star in the film, Britain’s The Mirror said Sunday.
A source tells the tab: “The buzz in Hollywood is all about R-Patz as the hot, young thing being lined up to fill Tobey Maguire’s shoes. It would be a hard act to follow as fans were traumatised at the news Tobey was going. His mild-mannered portrayal as Peter Parker and the transformation to Spider-Man kept millions of fans in the cinemas for the box-office smash. He also had great chemistry with Kirsten Dunst, who plays love interest Mary Jane.”
Does Pattz really stand a chance with Efron and Gyllenhaal also in the running? “I don’t know what the chances are to be honest. I assume they’re pretty slim. It’s a long-shot but if it came down to it, it’d be a dream come true. What young actor wouldn’t?”
