Tang Wei's powerful enemies engineered her media ban

The media ban imposed on Chinese actress Tang Wei two years ago for starring in the sexually charged 2007 film "Lust, Caution" was a result of her having powerful enemies, said Chinese film director Lu Chuan.

Chinese media reported in 2008 that the media ban saw Chinese regulators ordering television stations and print media to pull advertisements featuring Tang and barring them from reporting on the actress.

Lu said on his blog that there were two seldom-mentioned theories about why Tang was slapped with a media ban. The first is that the 30-year-old star had failed to attend a function by someone related to the political elite. The second is that another well-connected actress had turned party officials against Tang and engineered her ban.

Rumours have been rife on the Internet that "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" actress Zhang Ziyi, who had been embroiled in numerous scandals in recent months, was the mastermind behind Tang's ban. However, Lu refused to name any names.

Some industry observers have said that it is highly unlikely that Zhang orchestrated the incident as she had no motive. Zhang and Tang have never crossed swords and did not have conflicting interests.

This controversy has also attracted the attention of popular Chinese media personality Hung Huang who urged entertainment journalists to dig up the truth.

"Lust, Caution" raised the ire of censors in China due to its graphic sex scenes and was only released after numerous cuts. Despite the heavy censorship, the spy thriller went on to become a huge hit in China.
