Somehow, the first quarter of this year, has been pretty quiet for both Samsung and Nokia.
Nokia’s presence at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona totally sucked. Yes, I know, MeeGo and everything. But not a single device to help Symbian with their ^3 version launch… C’mon
Samsung’s presence at MWC wasn’t much better. Yes, they had a huge stand at the show. But with their single-minded focus on Bada this and Bada that, only one Bada device – Wave, which is basically a soaped up Jet, available, it was really boring.
Well, if a rumor mill now starting to spin, has any substance to it, things are about to get much more interesting for the two biggest mobile handset makers in the world.
Let’s start with Samsung.
According to Mobile review.com, Samsung has 4 powerful Windows Mobile handsets ready for this summer. And, they are currently in talks with Microsoft to make these handsets officially upgradeable to Windows Phone 7 Series OS in January 2011. If the talks are successful, new Samsung Windows Phone Starter Pack handsets, and their upgrade path to 7 Series, will be announced at the same time. At launch, the new Samsung handsets should be the most powerful Windows Mobile devices on the market, significantly ahead even from HTC HD2. And, if I’m reading this tweet by Eldar Murtazin right, at least one of them will come 4” Super-Amoled display and HD video support.
Also, about the same time Samsung will launch 4 new Android phones, with the specs similar to those in WinMo handsets.
Now about Nokia.
According to @asrialbaker, from i-Symbian.com, there’s a new Symbian^3 Nokia E7-00 E-Series device in the works. It has 4” tilting AMOLED touchscreen display, slide QWERTY keyboard, 256MB or RAM, 1024MB of ROM, is only 14mm thin, comes in anodised aluminium body and has only a single hardware button on the front. Nokia N7-00 should start shipping in select markets in July 2010.
Well, sounds pretty much like this handset, that leaked last month
Now, I don’t know anything about @asrialbaker, so, for now, I’ll trust this Nokia E7-00 info much less, then the Samsung/WinMo stuff coming from MR’s Eldar. But the details provided, as well as the reaction from people I know have seen upcoming Symbian devices, makes me think that this stuff about N7-00 might be for real too.
