Robin Hood Can't Beat Iron Man on Friday
Despite the crowded marketplace on Friday, the box office performed well in line with all expectations. No longer benefiting from the early midnight shows, Iron Man’s second Friday was off a steep 71% from its opening night. Grossing an estimated $14 million, the film is on track to pull in another $50 million for the frame, a drop-off that will likely be over 60%. Universal’s Robin Hood, which debuted to middling reviews, is faring quite well. The Ridley Scott, Russell Crowe pairing earned an estimated $13 million on Friday, and is on track to generate between $38 and $40 million for the weekend. One thing is for sure, its gross internationally is far more robust than its performance stateside. In fact, internationally, Robin Hood will generate over $75 million for the weekend, a number that will translate to over $200 million for the entire run. Not bad for a film that critics and media reporters were fearing was going to be the first real disappointment of the summer season.
Letters for Juliet will likely land in third place. This Tuscan-set romance starring Amanda Seyfried and Vanessa Redgrave earned an estimated $5 million on Friday night, a number that’s likely to translate to a $14 to $15 million for the weekend. Fox Searchlight’s Just Wright starring Queen Latifah also bowed this frame but is unlikely to generate anything beyond single digits for the weekend. The PG-rated romantic comedy grossed less than $3 million Friday and probably won’t earn more than $9 million once the three days are over. How to Train Your Dragon is expected to land in the fifth spot. The animated hit generated an estimated $1.2 million on Friday and should earn almost $5 million more by the time the weekend is finished.
Even with the steep drop off from Iron Man 2, this weekend is still likely to be an improvement over last year at this time when Angels and Demons bowed to $46 million and the second weekend of Star Trek took in an additional $43 million. Come back tomorrow for a full report.
