What do you think of the judges' song picks for the Top 3?
This week on American Idol, each of the final three contestants -- Crystal Bowersox, Lee DeWyze and Casey James -- each get to pick one song to perform. The judges pick a song for each finalist, too. Friday, the judges announced their picks: Ellen DeGeneres chose Paul McCartney's Maybe I'm Amazed for Crystal; Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson picked John Mayer's Daughters for Casey James; and Simon Cowell picked one of his favorite songs, Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, for Lee DeWyze.
From my perspective, the only one of those three that provides the potential for the kind of "moment" the judges have carped on all season long is Maybe I'm Amazed, which has a middle section that could easily play to Crystal's fondness for Janis Joplin-style shouting. Casey likely will sing Daughters well, and it'll certainly appeal to that older female demographic that is assumed to be his core fanbase, but I don't see it as a song that can provide the momentum for a serious run at the finale.
Simon's choice of Hallelujah -- previously performed memorably on the show by Jason Castro and, this season, by Tim Urban -- is the most mystifying. Great song? Sure. Popular and well-known? You bet. But even though the song hasn't been performed on Idol as much as many people think it has -- it's not Saving All My Love for You, after all -- it's associated with people who couldn't go the distance. And, worse, it's already been sung by one of this season's finalists. Maybe Simon sees it as a safe choice that can let Lee slide into the finale, but it strikes me another sign of Simon's laziness and the general disinterest that he's brought to the job this season.
