“Saw” Guinness World Record: “Most Successful Horror Series In History”

The Saw film franchise has earned an unlikely honor: a place in the Guiness Book of World Records. Saw has been dubbed the “Most Successful Horror Movie Series.”

“I’m still in shock. The fact that we beat out (such horror franchises as) ‘Friday the 13th,’ ‘Nightmare on Elm Street,’ ‘Halloween’ and ‘Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ is a testament to our cast, crew and our partners at Lionsgate,” Saw producer Mark Burg said Thursday.

The Saw films center around homicidal maniac Jigsaw, a serial killer who puts his victims through psychological torture before killing them. The franchise consists of six movies, each one having come out consecutively every Halloween since 2004. The horror features have grossed more than $73O million at the worldwide box-office and sold more than thirty million DVDs.

Last year’s Saw VI is the only film in the franchise’s history to not top the box office over Halloween weekend. That honor went to Paranormal Activity, the spooky low-budget feature that became a cult favorite thanks to word of mouth campaigns on social networking hubs like Facebook.com and Twitter.com. Saw will go up against Paramount’s Paranormal Activity 2 when both films open this fall.

The seventh, and final, installment of Saw is due in theaters Oct. 29. While we’re on the topic of Saw, check out the trailer for Saw VII: 3D. (Above.)

The Guinness presentation will take place at the annual Comic Con Convention in San Diego on Friday.
