The start of "EEG Next Station Tin Hau Singing Competition" is quickly approaching. Yesterday afternoon, EEG chairman Ng Yu and overseas CEO Lian Hui arrived in Chengdu and accepted an exclusive interview. Revealing how Twins, Joey Yung, Nicholas Tse, and other EEG superstars' "inside story of the making of a star." From today onwards, a 4-part series will be published reporting the fairytale of the making of EEG stars.
From the first time seeing Ah Sa, knew that she would be popular
Today, our focus is on Twins. But before hearing Ng Yu start his story, you must first get to know what kind of a legend this plump and inconspicuous middle-aged man is. Ng Yu has an extremely high reputation in Hong Kong, previously appointed as TVB's commissioner and afterwards rebuilding the previously near-brankupt Capital Artist Music Company. Nine years ago, after EEG boss Albert Yeung managed to very expensively bring over Ng Yu, EEG's original artists managed to increase in popularity with recently signed artists rapidly rising up the ranks.
Speaking of Twins, Ng Yu smiles and tells the journalist that even before he joined EEG, he could already tell that Ah Sa had the hidden qualities to become popular. "One day, Albert Yeung told me to come see several artists they were preparing to sign, to let me help them see which girl is good." When he saw Ah Sa, Ng Yu felt that even though she was not very beautiful, she was very cute and had an appeal that could capture the audience. "Whether or not you appeal to the audience is precisely if you can fix your eyes on her without your mind wandering away. In short, if she can attract my sight, then she should be able to attract the sight of the audience." After Ng Yu and Ah Sa had a brief conversation, he had a good feeling. "She is a very intelligent girl, she's much brighter than Gillian. I felt that this girl, Ah Sa, would definitely be popular. I even told her this." Ng Yu did not ponder on this matter too long, but not long after he joined EEG, these two girls had already become popular. "Afterwards, I got to know Ah Sa's father well. One day, he told me: 'You don't know, but she often talks about you. The day you first met each other, she said that Ng Yu older brother told her that she would later become popular. Wow, she was so happy she couldn't sleep that night!'"
Packaging Twins - Can't sing well, it's okay; Cute enough, then that's alright
Ah Sa and Ah Gil were introduced through their model agencies, then joined EEG in 2000. "At that time we were not intending on creating a female group, but only that we separately signed two girls. Afterwards, we found out that they often hung out with each other, and Ah Sa was very sweet, Ah Gil pretty. Both give people a very happy and very sunshine-bright feeling. At the time, Hong Kong was affected by the financial crisis, the public's mood was subpar and needed this energy. So we combined them to create a pair of student sweethearts and lovable girls, starting from school songs and nursery rhyme songs."
This duo can be considered as EEG's most successful packaging. "They represented Hong Kong families' dream little girl image, so they appealed to a wide age range. Children wanted older sisters to like them in the same way, young people wanted their little sisters to like them in the same way, and every father and mother wanted to have a daughter like them. They didn't sing very well, but it didn't matter. As long as they were cute enough, it was alright." As a result, EEG bravely let Twins sing nursery rhymes and released a very popular nursery rhyme album. Afterwards, they gradually began to sing simple young-love songs which were all very popular. Seizing the business opportunity, EEG used Twins' image to release a variety of products, including schoolbags, stationary, etc., earning a large profit. In order to maintain these two girls' naive, innocent and adorable image, at press conferences and when being interviewed at events, EEG held back one trick - "We didn't write any scripts for them to refer to. We just let them talk and it didn't matter if they didn't speak well. Besides, little girls are also like this and don't understand, the audience ends up liking you even more." Ng Yu laughs, saying: "Of course the basic things to look out for, we would tell them. Other things didn't matter."
At the same time, Ng Yu honestly says that there is a time period context for their success: "At the time, they were a very successful marketing package. But if two girls were to come out as a group nowadays, they may not be successful. Because at that time, the market had not seen this sort of group, the feeling was very fresh. Afterwards, there were many companies who copied us with this kind of packaging."
After "Sex Photos Gate" - Ah Sa seeks femininity, Ah Gil walks the strong path
In 2008, the "Sex Photos Gate" scandal stirred all of Hong Kong and brought an enormous shock to EEG. Looking back, Ng Yu openly expressed that there were areas that were not handled well. During the interview, he never mentions the words "sex photos" and only refers to it as "that incident." "After it happened, everyone was too rushed. Our company's idea was to hope that she'd be the first person from the incident to come out and break off the entire matter. But online, everyone said that at that time, Ah Gil appeared the most relaxed. The result that came out was that everyone felt that we were not serious. In short, at that time we were a little too optmistic. We thought that the whole matter would break off and end very quickly. Now the feeling was that everyone was too rushed!" Ng Yu continues, saying that the company immediately became aware. The matter wasn't as simple as everyone had though, so in order to save it in time, Twins would develop separately. After all, both girls born in the 80s can't forever dress as young girls. "The incident's already happened. Don't look back and think about it, but rather look forward to think about how to make up for the incident, plan."
Now, Ah Sa has developed and expanded well in terms of acting and singing. Ah Gil has also begun to recover work, filming a TV series. "Right now, it's searching for the mature and independent woman quality in Ah Sa; Ah Gil will walk a strong (woman) path." Ng Yu also specifically mentions that Ah Sa's hit song <Two Without One> was specially composed. Ng Yu states that through the song, Ah Sa sings of the memories of the good sisters, revealing the truth and reluctance to part. "This feeling took a hold of me very strong, and brought about the sympathy of the public." From this, it can be seen that so rich with experience, EEG has a good grasp towards the public's preferences and attitude, something to admire.
As for nowadays, the two have not had problems with finding opportunities to perform together. Ng Yu expressed that this year in 1 month, they held a concert in their first concert in HK Coliseum since 4 years ago. Besides obtaining successful results, "when we were promoting, even though we didn't clearly say it, we gave a hint signally that this may be Twins' last concert. Up until now after all the trouble of having them develop separately, we must not be turning back. But we can't say it so rigidly - if there are big performances or events, we can consider having them appear together. Of course it will only be temporary." Regarding these sisters already flying solo, what EEG has asked of them from the start is to give spectators the right message.
