'Megamind' kicks off holiday film season at No. 1

He didn't lay waste to the box office world, but the comedic super villain Megamind did enough to vanquish his foes at theaters this weekend.

The DreamWorks comedy kicked off the holiday season with the $130 million cartoon Megamind, which earned $47.7 million this weekend, according to studio estimates from Hollywood.com.

While some analysts projected an opening as high as $60 million, the debut met most projections and got the comedy, voiced by Will Ferrell and Tina Fey, off to a solid, if unspectacular, start for the rest of the year.

Typically, big-studio animation takes in three to four times its debut.

Buoyed by solid reviews —Megamind earned recommendations from 67% of the nation's critics, according to RottenTomatoes.com — the film became the latest to flourish with a 3-D component. Six of the top 10 movies this year employed some 3-D.

Due Date, the latest comedy from Hangover director Todd Phillips, was strong out of the gate, raking in $33.5 million, $5 million better than most projections.

Tyler Perry, known more for his cross-dressing Madea comedies, enjoyed a strong debut with his drama For Colored Girls. Based on the 1975 play, Girls bowed to $20.1 million, $3 million above expectations and good for third place.

The action film RED was fourth with $8.9 million, followed by Saw 3D, which dropped 66% from its debut to take fifth place and $8.2 million.

Opening in New York and Los Angeles, 127 Hours, Danny Boyle's true-life drama about Aron Ralston, a mountain climber who had to amputate his own arm, scored a strong $265,025 on four screens. The movie expands nationwide later this month

  1. Megamind - $47,650,000
