Update on “4 Stations Joint Media Award”: Joey Yung doesn’t have a chance to repeat her win this year
With the various music awards shows gearing up to start handing out this year’s results, there were reports out today that the highly contentious “4 Stations Joint Media Award” will be cancelled. According to a source, the 4 stations (RTHK, Commercial Radio, Metro Radio, and TVB) held a meeting the day before yesterday and with a vote of 2 to 1, decided to cancel the award this year. If true, then it means that last year’s winner – EEG’s Joey Yung – will not have an opportunity to win the award again this year. In addition, after the meeting, TVB decided to play hardball by delaying the official joint announcement of the award’s cancellation.
Due to the ongoing dispute between TVB and the big 4 record companies, last year’s JSG Awards Ceremony (TVB’s music awards show) did not give out any awards to the big 4 artists, causing artists such as Eason Chan, Kay Tse, Hacken Lee, etc. to become ‘sacrificial lambs’ of the dispute. The results of the JSG awards last year were highly contentious and sparked much debate from all sides. A few days ago, our paper was the first to reveal that the 4 stations held their first meeting back at the end of October to discuss whether the Media award should be cancelled this year. At that time, the organizer of the meeting – government station RTHK – suggested casting votes to decide the outcome. [TN: The results of that meeting were inconclusive.]
According to sources, the 4 stations held their second meeting day before yesterday. As they did in the previous meeting, RTHK and Commercial Radio were in favor of canceling the award. TVB, however, was in favor of keeping the award, stating that there was no unfairness with the JSG awards last year and it was the big 4 record companies who decided not to attend. As for Metro Radio, they decided to remain neutral due to their good relationship with all the HK record companies. As a result, when the 4 stations had their second round of voting [TN: first round was during the October meeting], it was 2 in favor of canceling and 2 opposed. During the 3rd round of voting, Metro decided to forfeit their vote, so in the end, it was 2 against 1 in favor of canceling the award this year [TN: RTHK and Commercial Radio voted in favor, TVB voted against]. At the end of the meeting, the 4 stations agreed to make a joint announcement about the cancellation (which was supposed to take place yesterday).
However, it is rumored that TVB is dissatisfied with the results of the voting and therefore delayed the announcement of the cancellation yesterday. After news of the rumored cancellation was leaked to the media, it became a hot topic amongst all of the major record companies. According to sources, Emperor Entertainment Group (EEG) was extremely unhappy with the news, as their ‘number one sister’ Joey Yung won the award last year and was in a good position for a repeat win this year, so if the award is cancelled, it is unfair to Joey. When the reporter called EEG’s administrative chairman Ng Yu to seek clarification on the matter, he responded: “I have not received notification; let me understand the matter first.”
RTHK’s spokesperson Fung Wai Tong admitted that a decision was made during their meeting 2 days ago and plans were made to announce yesterday, however TVB indicated that they need to have upper management review before they can release a joint statement, so currently, they are waiting for TVB’s response. Asked if the award will be cancelled this year, Fung Wai Tong responded: “Not going to respond right now.” Metro Radio’s spokesperson responded: “RTHK didn’t organize the meeting very well – the topic of canceling the award only came up during the end of October meeting…with it being so close to the various award ceremonies, it’s unfair to all the record companies and artists.” As for Commercial Radio and TVB, neither station responded to requests for comment.
