Sony Pictures has released the first trailer from The Karate Kid. Will and Jada’s 11-year-old son Jaden Smith replaces baby-faced Ralph Macchio in the title role, while Jackie Chan (taking over the role inspired by Pat Morita’s mentor) and Academy Award-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson come along for the ride in supporting roles.
In this remake — a revamped version of the 1984 motion picture of the same name — work pressures cause a single mother (Henson) moves to China with her young son (Smith); in his new home, the boy embraces karate, taught to him by a master of the self-defense form (Chan).
The Karate Kid hits theaters June 11, 2010.
Synopsis: “The Karate Kid, directed by Harald Zwart (The Pink Panther 2), stars Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan, and Taraji P. Henson. Smith plays Dre, a skateboarding video game buff who moves to China after his single mother is forced to go there for work. Unable to speak Chinese, Dre finds it hard to settle in, and gets beat up by the local bully. Chan plays Mr. Han, a maintenance man who spots his black-eye and offers to teach him both martial arts and Chinese, so he can defend against all the kung-fu students.”
