Is Microsoft Bing one of the worst logos ever?

Microsoft has justly drawn acclaim for the revamp and re-launch of its search engine, Bing. But according to a well-known design blog, there's one serious problem with Bing: It features the worst logo of 2009.

Fast Company notes that the blog Brand New, an influential blog about branding and design, polled its readers to find which were the best and designed logos of 2009. Bing had the dubious honor of being the worst. Brand New writes this:

There are plenty of other blogs and sources critiquing the functionality and efficacy of Bing, so what truly brings us all here today is the sad, awful, unforgivable mutilation that has been done to these four poor letters of the Latin alphabet...I can’t even imagine how someone arrives at a design solution like this...There is bad taste and then there is this....Microsoft has never been a paragon of good design, or even decent design. But this is rubbing it in design's face.

Brand New may well be right, but Microsoft got almost everything else right about Bing. As for me, I don't particularly care about logos. I do care about features and speed, and in both cases Bing is a winner.
