Ella’s Spitting Scene Got NCC FrowningCTV and GTV’s idol drama – [Down With Love] is scheduled to be telecast on 24 Jan 2010. However it was unexpected that under the recent intensive promotion of the drama’s snip-shots, the scene of “Ella and Jerry bickering after nearly being involved in a car accident” and Ella “spitted” spitefully at Jerry just before she left, received complaints from some viewers. This created a first-ever in the history of a drama to receive a warning from NCC (Taiwan’s National Communications Commission) even before telecast.
The 1-minute long promotion clip featured Jerry’s character as an aloof lawyer and Ella’s character as a poor girl. Prior to this, they already had differences in the encounter at a restaurant. Subsequently when Jerry nearly knocked Ella over with his car, it immediately sparked off a quarrel between both parties. “Are you looking to die? Even so, you should stay away from my car!” Been down on her luck recently and still getting scolded when she was nearly knocked down, Ella turned away with her bicycle and retorted, “What’s there to look at, you think you’ve got big eyes? Puuut!” She spat.
Recently, this promotion clip has been playing intensively over television and on the Internet. Ella’s forthright and unpretentious performance left viewers with a very deep impression, and the clip’s hit counts shortly nearly exceeded over 10,000 hits, reflecting high popularity. However CTV received a warning letter from NCC yesterday, claiming that some viewers felt that the action of spitting is not refined and would mislead young children. Hence NCC wrote that they would like the TV stations to edit away the scene to avoid being fined.
When contacted, Ella shared that in fact, the script did not require her to spit. But as she was very into the role then, and felt that with Yang Guo’s (her character’s name) sunny, forthright and diligent personality; when faced with setbacks one after another, and exasperated after nearly being knocked down by a car, she would retaliate in frustration by spitting. In response to her witty design of this little action, members of the production team actually found it very adorable and in sync with Yang Guo’s boyish personality.
When Ella learnt of NCC’s warning letter, she expressed that she would put in more considerations in future when it comes to designing little actions for her roles. According to our sources, CTV and GTV felt that it was a pity to edit the scene based on NCC’s request. However after deliberation, both TV stations decided to do so.

Jerry Yan Serious to “Wed” Ella in High Profile Manner During the Premiere
Being the male and female leads of CTV and GTV’s idol drama – [Down With Love], Jerry and Ella will be “playing” the scene of “The Wedding of The Century” on the 20 Jan 2010 for the drama’s premiere at the Grand Hyatt Taipei Hotel. The whole event will be in accordance to a formal wedding, from arrangement of the flower girls and ring bearers, to best men and bridesmaids, parents of the newly weds, pastor, witnesses etc, are all formally and meticulously planned. In addition, the organizers also printed invitation cards of 3 different designs and even sponsored 120 boxes of limited edition wedding cookies, spending over NT$1,000,000.
With the names of their characters in the drama, Jerry and Ella’s onscreen romance is named “Ping Guo Romance” by everyone. Passionate and enthusiastic fans have been calling up the organizers to enquire if they could also be present during the premiere and indicated they wish to send flowers. In response, GTV said, if fans wish to participate in the premiere, they could donate the money to charity organizations or show their support for environmental conservation instead. They regret that the premiere will be a closed-door event to members of the public.
