“Modern Warfare 2” reaches $1 billion sales mark

Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick said in a statement, "There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1 billion mark, which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and the mass appeal of this game."

The hugely popular ‘Call Of Duty’ franchise was released in the beginning of November 2009 and within 24 hours earned $310 million in sales, shattering numerous records in entertainment and gaming industry globally.

MW2 gathered $550 million in sales within five days after its release, surpassing hits like “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and “GTA IV” game. It not only became the ‘best game’ of the year but also the most pirated game of 2009.

James Cameron’s movie “Avatar” achieved the feat first
James Cameron’s movie “Avatar” surpassed the coveted $1 billion mark in the ticket sales recently. The movie continues to draw movie lovers to the theatres around the world, with movie’s larger-than-life storyline and graphics.

“Avatar” has not just impressed the audiences but has managed to wow the critics also.

“Avatar” has also managed to generate over $1 billion at the ticket counter (coinciding with Modern Warfare 2 sales), which definitely is a huge compliment for the director of the film, James Cameron, who had previously directed smash hit film “Titanic”.

Without a doubt everyone involved with the movie at Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment and the stakeholders in the mammoth production must be on cloud nine after seeing these staggering sales figures.

Game enthusiasts’ reaction on online forums

The game’s success has registered opposite feelings on the blogosphere. Some like it, some don’t. Here’s what some of the gaming enthusiasts had to say on the game:

An online reader davidstvz on wired.com wrote, “I guess I’m one of the few not in love with Modern Warfare. I tried the single player campaign in the first game and was greatly put off by the presentation (strangely enough). It usually ran at 60 fps, yet the few times it didn’t were made all the worse for that. I’d rather a rock solid 30 than even a mostly solid 60. And that art was suffering from some serious uncanny valley problems. If they drop the prices to 20 bucks before the next-next-gen consoles come out, I’ll probably pick them up.”

Another reader Super2online on news.cnet.com posted, “I have yet to see Avatar. I will wait until the DVD hits the streets. But my four children have enjoyed over 100 hours of collectively of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. That was a very worthwhile purchase.”
