FIVE and a half years ago I asked ANGELINA JOLIE if she'd slept with BRAD PITT. I was bored and worried - it was at a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival.
It doesn't sound too bold a question now, but at the time he was still with JENNIFER ANISTON and rumours were just beginning to surface he'd got rather close to Jolie on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith.
"Hello Angelina, Martel Maxwell from The Sun. Word has it you got close to Brad Pitt when the cameras stopped filming on your last film?"
Cue Mafia-style silent throat-slitting action from the big-wig director to a heavy, signalling "get her out of here". Thank God for WILL SMITH, who was on stage with Angelina to promote the animated film Shark Tale.
"Come on Ange," he said, "The girl from The Sun wants to know . . . did you shag Brad Pitt?"
As the crowd was now laughing, she knew she had to answer. "Shag? No I didn't shag Brad Pitt."
And with that, I knew two things were true.
First, she most probably had slept with Pitt.
Because celebrities like lying.
It's why you can guarantee that now, as her camp insist things are hunky dory with Brangelina in the midst of rumours of a split, they very much are not.
Second, on the face of it Angelina had it all but it was somehow clear that wouldn't make her happy.
Most of us would settle for Brad Pitt. Not only did Jolie have him, she had her dream family of six children with him - three adopted and three of their own.
She was consistently voted sexiest woman in the world, commanded millions to act in Hollywood blockbusters and had fairytale homes.
She had it all. But in that 'all' were issues which no amount of money, fame or beauty could make disappear.
It's said she suffered depression after the death of her mum, she's desperately unhappy in her relationship because her partner wants different things from her and doesn't share her desire to adopt a fourth child.
Consider that last sentence - it could apply to any woman. It's not glamorous, it's just real life.
Think back to a time when you were really happy. Did it involve money? Probably not. Did it involve you looking in the mirror and realising that yes, you are super-hot? Well, maybe!
We've all heard that money can't buy you happiness.
And we've probably replied with a laugh and said we'd rather be unhappy and loaded than miserable and skint.
But celebrities really have a way of demonstrating the point beautifully - seemingly being more prone to unhappiness the more they have on the surface.
Maybe it's because they lose their identity. If you're constantly told you're amazing, it's easy to lose sight of who the real you is, what makes you happy and what you want.
Beauty and riches might be the things most of us envy Angelina for, but the inside of her head right now seems an unenviable place to be.
Brangelina Still On; Brangelina at the Oscars...Not So Much
The plot thickens...or maybe that's just the work schedules.In any case, don't go looking to the red carpet for confirmation that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are still together, as multiple sources close to the couple tell E! News that the unbroken Brangelina will not, despite a report to the contrary, be attending the Oscars on March 7.
As for why the couple, not seen together publicly since a December outing in New York, has suddenly caught a case of the camera-shies?
Jolie will be heading to Venice at the end of February to start production on The Tourist, a remake of a French thriller costarring Johnny Depp in which Jolie plays a vengeful Interpol agent.
And while Inglourious Basterds is pretty much guaranteed a couple of nominations, Pitt's not a sure bet to attend, either. He hasn't exactly been a fixture on the awards circuit this year, skipping out on the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards, but he is due to present at the Directors Guild of America Awards on Saturday, where Quentin Tarantino is up for the prize.
Who knows, maybe Pitt will opt to watch the kids while Mom brings home the bacon?
Although fans might lament the loss of Brangelina on the red carpet, there is one upshot: Ryan Seacrest won't be needing his running shoes.
BRAD PITT, ANGELINA JOLIE ‘PREPARED PRENUPTIAL AGREEMENT’
SOURCES close to Hollywood super-couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie — AKA Brangelina — insist the pair’s recent visit to an LA divorce lawyer wasn’t because they’re gearing up for a split.Britain’s News of The World reported Sunday that the Jolie and Pitt — who aren’t married, but have been together over five years and raise six children — had signed a multi-million dollar split deal.
But insiders insist that the duo saw their legal team to prepare the equivalent of a prenuptial agreement — not to split up.
Although a split could still be on the cards, the insider notes.
“Brad and Angelina had a meeting with a top law firm in LA in December, where they worked out terms of a legal document similar to a prenup,” a source told American magazine Life & Style.
“The couple signed the document in early January. They agreed to share their money and assets and custody of their six children, all of whom would live with Angelina in the event of their parents’ breakup.
“They didn’t talk to the lawyer about splitting, nor was that ever mentioned at the meeting.”
“They were snippy with each other during the meeting,” added a second source. “Brad and Angelina aren’t splitting right now.
“Will they be together forever as a couple? Probably not. It’ll run its course, but I think they’re fine — for now.”
