Simon Cowell infuriates new American Idol judge Ellen DeGeneres by keeping her waiting on first day of auditions

Ellen DeGeneres has only been a judge on American Idol for two weeks, but it appears her new role isn't going as quite smoothly as she hoped.

The comedienne was reportedly left furious after head judge Simon Cowell turned up to record the show an hour and a half late.

DeGeneres, 52, has to split her time between her popular morning chat show and her new judging duties, so had specially arranged for own programme to finish early to accommodate Idol.

Originally anxious about her first day at her new job, DeGeneres' nerves soon turned to anger when Cowell, 50, failed to arrive on time.

When he finally arrived 90 minutes later, DeGeneres expressed her disappointment.

The filming marked the first day of 'Hollywood Week', which sees the original contestants who passed the open auditions, whittled down to a smaller group ahead of the live shows.

A source told Hollywood news website Deadline.com: 'Here it was the first day of taping of the Hollywood shows, and Ellen was there waiting for Simon to show up.

'Ellen's new to the gig and she's very organised and she made a commitment to take this on, and now she's asking herself, 'What did I get myself into?' She called Simon Cowell a prima donna. So right from the start, the chemistry isn't great.'

Writing about her first day on her Twitter page two weeks ago, DeGeneres gave no hint of any trouble.

She wrote: 'At my 1st night of Idol. They told me no pics. Cant say where we’re taping...

'Now that Simon’s announced he’s leaving, who’s going to start wearing the tight shirts around here? Ryan? Randy?'

In an interview after her first week, DeGeneres admitted she was finding it hard to crush wannabe popstars' dreams.

Speaking on her own talk show, she said: 'I don’t like that (telling people they haven't made the cut) and I’m not that kind of person - because they have a name for a person who likes to hurt people’s feelings - it’s called Simon.'

DeGeneres was announced as a shock replacement for former judge Paula Abdul in September, who abruptly quit last year after seven seasons on the show.

After her departure, the show's producers said they would bring in several pop stars and performers to fill guest judge spots on Idol for the original auditions.

Along with Victoria Beckham, these included Katy Perry, Shania Twain, Mary J. Blige, Joe Jonas, Neil Patrick Harris, Avril Lavigne and Kristin Chenoweth.

American Idol pulls in an average of 26.3 million viewers per episode, and is worth more than $1billion, and watched in about 100 countries.
