Singer Gary Cao gets 12 months' probation for drunken brawl
Malaysian singer Gary Cao has been sentenced to 12 months' probation for last year's drunken brawl. He also signed a HK$1,000 guarantee to stay out of trouble for a year.
He will avoid leaving a criminal record if he carries out his guarantee and does not get involved in any cases of assault, behaving inappropriately in public, disturbing the peace, or damaging public property for the next 12 months.
Cao was tried in court on Friday for his drunken brawl with close friend, singer Justin Lo, that occurred in Hong Kong's Central district in September last year.
During the brief ten-minute trial, Cao admitted his guilt and expressed regret for his actions. He also stressed that Lo did not hit him at all. Throughout the proceedings, Cao only gave short answers like "I agree" and "I understand".
After leaving the court, Cao told reporters that he would "respect the judge's decision" and apologised for "causing everyone unnecessary trouble". He added that he is "still good friends" with Lo but "would not go drinking with him again".
Despite having previously expressed regret for his actions, Cao told reporters after a variety show recording on Saturday that he will not give up drinking.
"Many of my friends sent me encouraging messages and told me to quit drinking, but they don't understand me at all. I should quit getting drunk. If I quit drinking, that would imply that alcohol is a poison. I will learn to drink in moderation. I will not touch a drop of alcohol this month," said Cao.
Cao also insisted that he did not have a drinking problem. He said that he "did not want to dwell on it" and preferred to work towards becoming "a new Gary Cao for everyone to see".
