Orange announces Intel Atom-based MeeGo devices; Nokia N900 will have a role in testing MeeGo

Announced by Nokia and Intel at MWC 2010, MeeGo, the new versatile platform that combines Moblin and Maemo, will be used by Orange in some of its future devices based on the Intel Atom processor.Orange says that these MeeGo devices (possibly including smartphones, tablets and netbooks) will come with a range of Orange multimedia services, like Orange Maps and Orange TV (which are part of the Orange Signature Services).
Orange’s MeeGo devices will also have a “customized home-screen”, just like many of the carrier’s handsets currently have.
Orange didn’t mention when its MeeGo devices will be launched. However, Intel and Nokia have previously announced that the very first MeeGo devices would only be available in late 2010, so they’re still about a year away.
Orange devices aside, Valtteri Halla from the MeeGo Technical Steering Group has announced (via SlashPhone) that, by the end of March, they will launch “the first and very raw baseline to a source and binary repository to build MeeGo trunk on Intel Atom boards and Nokia N900”.
While this doesn’t mean the N900 will be upgraded to MeeGo, it means that developers will be able to port the new platform to the device. For the moment, Nokia doesn’t seem to have any plans to officially upgrade the N900 to MeeGoo – you can watch this interview with Ari Jaaksi to find out more about MeeGo (and the N900).
