BlackBerry Bold 9650, one of RIM’s newest smartphones, will be available via both Sprint and Verizon in the US. While Verizon said nothing about the handset (yet), Sprint has just announced that it’s launching the Bold 9650 on May 23.
Sprint will sell the BlackBerry Bold 9650 for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and with a 2-yr contract agreement.
The Bold 9650 is a world phone, so it has both EV-DO and GSM/HSDPA connectivity – customers will be able to use it in more than 185 countries across the globe.
Sprint’s BlackBerry Bold 9650 will feature a 480 x 360 pixels display, BlackBerry OS 5, optical trackpad, full QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, GPS, Sprint Navigation, stereo Bluetooth, 3.5mm headset jack, Sprint Music Store, Sprint TV, Sprint Football Live, NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile, access to BlackBerry App World, 512 MB Flash memory, 2GB MicroSD card, and a 3.2MP autofocus camera with flash and video recording.
BlackBerry Bold 9650 hands-on: yeah, it's a Tour with an optical pad
If you had any illusions about what exactly the Bold 9650 is, make no mistake: owning a Tour takes you 95 percent of the way to understanding the experience. The only thing you'll really notice on an ongoing basis is the optical pad, which is definitely a big improvement over the trackball of old -- not only does it eliminate the issue of gunk buildup, but it's totally responsive and arguably even easier to use than the ball for most tasks. The version we used was Sprint-branded, but RIM has unbranded units on hand, too; we can only assume Verizon will end up picking it up, though Big Red has been uncharacteristically silent about the matter so far.
