HTC Android phones use Microsoft technologies, Microsoft licenses patents to HTC

HTC and Microsoft have been perfect for each other since a long time ago, and the result of this strong partnership can be easily seen if we look at HTC’s portfolio of Windows Mobile smartphones (more than 30 of them, launched almost all over the world, via many mobile carriers).

However, since Google’s Android came into play in late 2008, it seems as though HTC has starting to neglect Windows Mobile more and more.

In the light of this, it’s interesting how now – only now – Microsoft has unveiled that HTC’s Android smartphones are using technology patented by the Redmond giant. In consequence, HTC had to make an agreement with Microsoft, and it will pay royalties for using its patents. I assume that if HTC had stick to making Windows smartphones only, this wouldn’t have happened.

Neither Microsoft nor HTC has unveiled the financial details of the licensing agreement.
