Sandra Bullock Knocks Julia Roberts Off Mag Cover

This week, PEOPLE magazine was all ready to unleash its celebrated annual listing of the most beautiful people in the world. Julia Roberts was to be the cover girl; her classic movie star features -- those eyes, that smile -- were set to grace every supermarket checkout in America. The honor marks Jules' fourth time wearing the pretty people crown and her twelfth appearance on the list.

Each year, the mag runs its list as a cover story, and it's a big one -- the issue annually ranks among PEOPLE's bestsellers.

But what happens when the mag's big reveal, which is planned well in advance, is suddenly overshadowed by a bona fide bombshell -- exclusive news that demands not only immediate coverage but a cover? Well, sadly for Miss Roberts, she gets bumped (well, not entirely, that's her up there in the corner) to make room for the bigger story. And this week, we doubt there's a much bigger story (celeb-wise) than Sandra Bullock announcing that not only has she filed for divorce, she went ahead and adopted a bouncing baby boy.

It appears Julia has been usurped by her nemesis. One's nemesis is "an opponent or rival whom a person cannot best or overcome." Julia and Sandra have been nemeses for years. Both are beautiful and talented. Both are known for starring in blockbuster romantic comedies. And both are beloved by the public in a way few movie stars these days are.

However, Sandra has been stealing Julia's thunder lately. Back in the early aughts, Roberts moved into more dramatic waters, scoring an Oscar for 'Erin Brockovich,' and Bullock has reaped the benefits. (Did you know Julia turned down both 'The Proposal' and 'The Blind Side,' which, um, became career-best mega blockbusters for Bullock? Because she did!)

And now, she's kicking her off magazine covers. The nerve!

Pop culture enthusiast Chuck Klosterman notes that every person must have a nemesis, because competition motivates us. "Every woman I've ever known has had at least one close friend whose only purpose in life is to criticize her actions, compete for the attention of men and drive her insane; very often, this is a woman's best friend," he says. While we're not sure of the status of their friendship, this certainly describes the dynamic between Bullock and Roberts. Only they're not competing for men, they're competing for movie roles and magazine covers.

So it's your move, Julia. You can't take this sitting down; you can't let your nemesis win. Get out there, flash that million dollar smile, turn on the charm and turn 'Eat, Pray, Love' into the mega hit we know it can be. You've already got Oprah on your side, so that's a good start.

And keep in mind that 'The Blind Side' is the first film a female movie star carried to a gross of more than $200 million on her name alone. You know what that means -- $300 million is still up for grabs. You've already got our ten bucks.
