Lady Gaga dress up like Nanny McPhee for Sting's Rainforest Fund charity benefit

Lady Gaga leaves no stone unturned in her search for style inspiration.

And last night the eccentric star apparently found it in the form of Emma Thomson's famous children's character, Nanny McPhee.

The Paparazzi singer arrived at Carnegie Hall in New York for a charity benefit in a dramatic black gown that mirrored magical time-travelling nanny's trademark cloak.

Her hair, which appeared to be a shade of grey, was pulled back into a matronly bun too.

Thankfully, there were no warts in sight and Lady Gaga gave the look her own twist with a pair of gravity defying tippy toe boots.

Later she changed into a white confection as she joined Sting on stage at a benefit concert for the Rainforest Fund's 21st Birthday Celebration.

The pair were then joined by Dame Shirley Bassey, Debbie Harry and Bruce Springsteen for a rousing rendition of Don't Stop Believin' by eighties group Journey.

The 24-year-old star wore a delicate-looking white dress that appeared to be constructed from layers of thread wrapped around her body.

She also wore a matching white floral headpiece for the performance of Stand By Me, for which she played the piano.

Amusingly she had to remove one of her huge shoes in order to be able to operate the piano pedal.

The night also saw individual performances from the stars, with Elton John covering Madonna's Like A Virgin to great effect playing on his reputation as a diva queen surrounded by half-naked male dancers.

Mary J.Blige also made an appearance to perform a duet with Sting and actress Kate Hudson was amongst the celebrity contingent who lent their support to the event.

Meanwhile, Blondie star Debbie Harry arrived at the event in one of the Big Apple's famous yellow taxis.

The event was produced by Sting's wife Trudie Styler, who co-founded the Rainforest Foundation with her husband in 1989.

Since then the Foundation has been supporting indigenous peoples and traditional populations of the rainforest in their efforts to conserve their land and defend their rights.

Earlier this week Lady Gaga picked up four ECHO Awards in Berlin.

She was given the accolades for Best International Female Artist, Best Single Of The Year for her single Poker Face and Best International Newcomer.

Gaga wore a long black crepe dress and with a black veil covering her face at a photocall at the O2 World Arena in the German capital.

The singer will no doubt be exhausted after performing in Berlin and Hamburg earlier this week as part of the European leg of her Monster Ball tour.

Her appearance in New York took place during a three-day break from her tour before she heads back to Europe - hitting the Netherlands before travelling to Belgium and France and then bringing the tour to the UK on May 27.
