Google weren’t shy about confirming Android 2.2 Froyo’s star features at Google IO yesterday, but definitive timescales about when Android-addicts (other than developers) could actually get their hands on the OS were in short supply. That’s beginning to slowly change, with the official Google IO Twitter account announcing that the Nexus One would get Froyo in the “next few weeks“. As for other manufacturers, so far only HTC have stepped up with their plan.
“If your phone was launched this year, we will most likely offer an upgrade for it to the Froyo version. This includes popular models like the Desire and Droid Incredible as well as hotly anticipated phones like the Evo 4G, MyTouch slide and upcoming models. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can’t be more specific yet.” HTC
That’s the official word from HTC as told to Android Central, with the takeaway message being that if you haven’t got a 2010 model year Android handset from the company then you perhaps shouldn’t hold your breath. What that means for the popular HTC Hero – still awaiting its Android 2.1 update in Europe – is unclear.
HTC are apparently prioritising the Droid Incredible and Desire, according to Pocket Lint, though owners shouldn’t get their hopes up for an imminent release. Android 2.2 with HTC Sense won’t be ready until the second half of 2010, unfortunately.
