No action for Jet Li
Action superstar Jet Li's upcoming film "Ocean Heaven" will be his first film without any fight sequences in the past 30 years, reported Chinese media.
The film, slated for a summer release in China, revolves around a cancer-stricken man (Li) who devotes himself to taking care of his autistic son and tries to find a sanctuary for him before he succumbs to cancer.
Speaking to reporters at a recent charity event in China, Li, who had decided to devote himself to charity work last year and described acting as "a hobby", said it was a simple decision for him.
"I read a good script and I wanted to do it," said Li. "I did not deliberately set out to change my image, or looking to gain something. That is not important to me at all."
The actor was said to have loved the script so much that he personally roped in people to work on the project.
Taiwanese pop idol Jay Chou, whom Li worked with in 2006's "Fearless", has agreed to sing the film's theme song at his behest.
Li also took a pay cut to appear in the film.
"It is a film that has a budget of just seven million yuan (S$1.4 million), what acting fees can I ask for," said the action star, who usually demands millions for each film appearance.
The actor explained that "everyone involved in the film were not doing it for the money" but out of a sense of civic duty, as the film raised awareness on the difficulties autistic people and their loved ones faced.
Not that he ever needs to worry about money.
Li's wife, former beauty queen Nina Li Zhi, is a shrewd investor who was recently revealed to have made HK$35.6 million (S$6.4 million) when she sold a luxury residence she had the foresight to buy 20 years before.
