Sprint admits to HTC EVO 4G shortages. HTC Desire to get Sony SLCD displays

Not that shortages of Sprint HTC EVO 4G needed any confirmation, but now we have it anyway, directly from the lips of Sprint CEO Dan Hesse.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Sprint CEO admitted that EVO 4G proved “more popular then Sprint or HTC could foresee”, and that “they are facing shortages in some places due to better than expected demand” .

Reuters was also able to indirectly confirm that the culprit for the latest HTC smartphone shortages was Samsung, who is not able to meet the demand of display panels for the handsets.

Without mentioning Samsung directly, HTC rep. Keith Novak confirmed what we have speculated over the weekend. HTC has now added Sony as a second supplier of the displays. And, in addition to Korean Nexus One, they will start using Sony SLCD screens for HTC Desire handsets sold in Europe and Asia.

Replacing Samsung displays with Sony SLCDs in HTC Desire might relieve some pressure and allow HTC to produce more Droid Incredible handsets with AMOLED displays for Verizon. But if Samsung display panel shortages continue, SLCD equipped Droid Incredibles might not be too far away.

I wonder if we’ll notice the difference.
