'Avatar' gets IMAX re-release; 'Titanic' 3-D redo not yet official

IMAX announced today that beginning August 27, it will offer fans a two-week re-release of the highest-grossing movie ever. This time around Avatar will include 8 minutes of never-before-seen footage of James Cameron’s other-worldly extravaganza, contributing to the $235 million that the film has generated in IMAX theaters worldwide. As for Cameron’s other behemoth, Titanic, plans are still in the works to re-release the ocean liner disaster feature in 3-D sometime in 2012, but a month has not yet been decided upon. Paramount Pictures declined to comment, but sources say the release will be part of the studio’s 100-year celebration, which is likely to feature other special releases.Currently tests are being done with a variety of 3-D companies to convert the 13-year old Titanic into 3-D, but one has not yet been selected. The tests look great, says sources who have seen the footage. Once a technology company is chosen and a budget is agreed upon, an official release date will be set.
