China renews Google’s Internet Content Provider license
You remember when Google announced it was hacked by alleged Chinese hackers and some IP was stolen and emails accounts accessed? That blew up into a bigger conflict with China and Google over censorship with Google threatening to leave China and to stop censoring its search results.
Google looked like it was wielding a big pair of balls for a while as it started to redirect Chinese searchers to the Hong Kong page automatically which served mostly unfiltered results. We talked a bit about Google changing to keep its license in the June 29 edition of The Daily Slash.
As time came near for Google to get its license to operate in China renewed reality evidentially set in that if it didn’t comply with the Chinese government’s demands, it would be shut out of the biggest market in the world. Google stopped redirecting those Chinese searchers automatically and has now announced that China has renewed its operating license.
