Melina Kanakaredes Leaving “CSI: NY”
After six seasons as Detective Stella Bonasera, Melina Kanakaredes is handing in her badge on CSI: NY.
Melina’s contract recently ended and the Providence alum opted not to renew her deal with CBS’ fleeting forensic crime drama.
“We hoped Melina would return to ‘CSI: NY’ for another season, but we respect her decision to move on,” CBS and CBS TV Studios said in a joint statement. “Her amazing talent and invaluable contribution to the success of the series are greatly appreciated and will not be forgotten.”
Melina also issued a brief statement in the wake of Monday’s departure announcement: “I made some amazing and lifelong friendships during my six seasons on ‘CSI: NY’ … and I will treasure them forever!”
Carmine Giovinazzo is expected to return to the show as Det. Danny Messer. Hill Harper will reprise his role as Dr. Sheldon Hawkes. Actress Sela Ward is expected to be revealed as Kanakaredes’ replacement — and new partner to Gary Sinise’s Det. Mac Taylor — in an announcement from CBS later this week.
Kanakaredes’ announcement comes as the series preps to resume production on July 28. This fall, CSI: NY will move from its regular Wednesday night timeslot to a new night and time: Fridays at 9PM.
