Dell Streak to go on sale August 13th, $300 on-contract, $550 off-contact

Well it wasn’t “late July” after all. Dell have officially announced that preorders for the Streak for AT&T will start this Thursday. Dell’s Android-powered smartphone or tablet (depending on how you want to look at it) will be available on Friday.

Pricing is as we previously reported: $299 with an AT&T contract, or $549 without.

Dell and AT&T are clearly pricing this as a tablet, however given that its screen size is only 1″ bigger diagonally than the countless Samsung Galaxy S versions, which all cost $199 on their respective carriers, that may be a questionable decision to say the least. Sure, if you compare it to the iPad’s price, the Dell is doing rather well. But is one inch of screen really worth $100? That’s the big question here, and even more so given that the Streak’s and the Samsungs’ resolution is the same, despite the size difference.

Time will tell for sure.

Here’s a quick recap of the Streak’s specs and features:
  • Android 1.6
  • 5-inch capacitive multi-touch WVGA (800×480) screen
  • 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor
  • 5 MP camera with dual-led flash, VGA front facing camera
  • Wi-Fi, HSDPA 7.2 Mb/s and Bluetooth
  • 2 GB internal storage, microSD card slot
