Motorola Droid won’t get hotspot or tethering capabilities in Android 2.2

We already knew that updates to Android 2.2 for the Motorola Droid are supposed to start this week.

Today new information has surfaced, and it’s not good.

In spite of the fact that Android 2.2 natively supports wireless hotspot and wired tethering abilities, the update that the Droid will receive won’t do either.

A Motorola spokesperson said that the original Droid doesn’t have the hardware to support WiFi hotspot creation, and the reason for the lack of wired tethering is the fact that they don’t have any connection software for the computer side.

The Froyo update for the Droid will indeed start this week (if it hasn’t already), at first with a small batch of devices to check that everything is working correctly. If so, the general roll-out will then begin, and it will be carried out in phases, as is always the case with such things.
