Jackie Chan embroiled in donation scandal

After being taken to task recently for allegedly disrespectful Twitter comments about the recent bus hijacking in Manila, action star Jackie Chan found himself in the centre of yet another controversy - a donation scandal.

According to Hong Kong reports, Chan's charity organisation, The Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation, claimed that the star had donated 15 million yuan (S$2.9 million) in aid to victims of the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake.

However, only 10 million yuan (S$1.9 million) had been accounted for and questions have been raised about how his charity organisation handled donation funds.

On Monday, Emperor Entertainment Group chairman Albert Yeung spoke up in support of Chan saying he believed in the actor's character.

"I have known him (Chan) for a long time. He has always been honest and sincere. He is never one to drag his feet," said Yeung, who, together with Chan donated 10 million yuan to aid victims.

"The truth will come to light. Chan is not someone who reneges on his promises."

Troubling news

A Shanghai newspaper also claimed that Chan had failed to live up to his donation promises.

According to The Shanghai Overseas Chinese News (SOCN), Chan visited Wenchuan last year, and pledged to donate a portion of his earnings from his 2010 movie "Little Big Soldier" to rebuild the Beichuan Middle School, which was devastated by the earthquake.

However, the school's principal Liu Yachun told the newspaper that the school has yet to receive the money.

In addition, the newspaper noted that neither Chan nor his charity's Beijing branch, The Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation Beijing (JCCFB), was named on the donor list released by the Overseas Chinese Economic and Cultural Foundation of China (OCECFC), which oversaw donations to Beichuan Middle School.

In response to these allegations, JCCFB explained that Chan had not yet received his cut of the "Little Big Soldier" earnings and therefore has not donated the money, adding that the actor will definitely deliver on his promise.

It also revealed that legal action will be taken against SOCN as well as the OCECFC.

The newspaper refused to back down and had in turn said it was willing to "verify the facts" with doubters "at any time", pointing out that it had already shown restraint by not doing follow up reports, despite calls from other media to do so.
