Jay Chou breaks into Hollywood: I will tell if I'm getting married
Jay Chou might be keeping us guessing about his lady love, but one thing is for sure - he would never do an Andy Lau.
“I will definitely make it public if I am getting married,” the Mandopop star told The Daily Chilli when he was in town to promote his latest flick The Treasure Hunter.
Nevertheless, he thinks that it’s still too early for him to settle down.
“Come on, I’m only 30 years old,” he said with a laugh, adding that he wishes he can find someone who is willing to follow him on an adventure, anytime and anywhere.
”My role in The Treasure Hunter is someone casual who doesn’t give much thought to consequences. I’m kind of like that in real life. If I have a girlfriend, I would love to be able to just grab her hand and say, ‘Come, let’s go here or there’ and off we go.
“That’s my attitude about love. I hope I can meet this type of girl,” he said.
Speaking of girlfriends, the Mandopop golden boy was in the past romantically linked to a string of gorgeous female stars including S.H.E’s Hebe.
“It’s quite hard for my female friends. If the paparazzi got a picture of us hanging out together, the girl would be reported as my girlfriend and no guy would dare to court her,” he said with a laugh.
Career wise, Chou is going to make his Hollywood debut in superhero action film The Green Hornet and it was a brand new experience for him.
“For a Hollywood production, before shooting, they would do rehearsals for around half a month and rehearse the lines for like, 20 to 30 times, you know, like how you would do with stage plays.
“At first I was a bit impatient, but I saw how superstars like Cameron Diaz were going through the rehearsals with the director patiently. I mean, who am I to complain?”
One might be intimidated by a Hollywood A-lister like Diaz, but Chou had struck up a friendship with the Charlie’s Angels star.
“At first, it was a bit hard to communicate with the co-stars. I spoke with Cameron in my broken English for five minutes. Slowly we became friends and after that, I taught them a lot of Mandarin and Cameron actually enjoyed learning Mandarin.”
With him taking on the role of Kato in The Green Hornet, who is a master of martial arts, it seems like Chou was following the footsteps of Jackie Chan and Jet Li to be the next Chinese action star in Tinseltown.
“I’m happy if people think I’m an action star, because I’m no Jet Li. It’s not something that I’m good at. I’m just a musician.
“Starring in a Hollywood movie is actually a chance for me to introduce my music. Once I warm up to these people, I would start giving them my CD [laughs],” he said, adding that he had met producers along the way and is currently in talks about possible collaborations.
Though his film resume is getting thicker these days, music will still be his number one passion.
“I originally planned to launch an album this year, but it has to be delayed to next February or March because of my involvement in The Green Hornet.
“I did not churn out much music this year, because I was spending my time on films. Next year will definitely be about music.”
Though he enjoys acting, it is not something he would make as his full-time career.
“When I told Cameron that I was actually a singer and I act in films for fun, she was surprised. I’m different from other actors. Music is always the main thing for me.”
In fact, if given a choice, Chou, who had directed Secret in 2007, actually prefers making music videos over films.
Any unfulfilled dream when it comes to music? "Winning a Grammy," said Chou.
“It’s near to impossible to win a Grammy Award with music that is in non-English languages. So that’s a dream of mine,” he said.
