Lee DeWyze pits Simon against Kara and Randy

We're halfway through the show, and I've only heard one performance I really dug -- and the judges hated that one. Maybe Lee DeWyze can turn things around, but, right now, it's looking like the judges were right that the girls are stronger this year than the boys. On the other hand, a lot of the male contestants I'm especially curious about are coming up in the second half.

Lee brings out his guitar for Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars. He starts quietly, but when he starts to crescendo, he's got a little bit of that Chris Daughtry/David Cook rasp. A couple of notes slide too much, but overall this is a very solid performance -- especially considering the competition so far.

Ellen loves the tone of Lee's voice but notes that his voice started to go off-pitch when he pushed too hard. Randy's disappointed, though. He didn't like the song, thought it was too rangy, too soft for him. "You're more of a rocker," he says. "I would choose a little bit harder things that you could sink your teeth into."

Kara thinks he needs to pick a song with more range.

Contrarian Simon, however, disagrees with Kara and Randy, saying he thinks Lee's was the best performance so far. '"This guy is a naturally good singer," he says, to the cheers of the crowd.
