Lacey Brown: "I had the strangest feeling that I was going home'

Lacey Brown says she wasn't shocked when she learned of her elimination from American Idol Wednesday night. In fact, she felt it coming.

"I woke up yesterday morning and had the strangest feeling that I was going home," she told reporters during a conference call Thursday.

That premonition gave her time to make peace with her fate.

"It wasn't a downer moment for me; I wasn't upset," she says. "It was just, 'Okay.' It wasn't comfortable. … I wish I would have been wrong about that feeling, obviously."

Lacey says she's trying to stay positive and make the most of her situation. "I haven't put my focus on anything negative going on.

"This is a reality show, and this is a show that someone has to go home every week. The fan base is very, very, very important. I think it has been a shocker sometimes, but that's just the nature of the beast that is American Idol. That's how the show rolls."

She says that the 12th spot on American Idol "is not a bad place to be," but that getting eliminated was still hard -- or, more accurately, "overwhelming."

After getting eliminated before the semifinals of Season 8, Lacey returned to Texas and learned as many songs as she could that suited her voice, then sang them in public whenever possible. "I needed to go home and figure out what kind of songs worked for my voice," she says.

Claiming the influence of acts like Patsy Cline and Pete Yorn, she notes that she has a very different type of voice that isn't well-suite to some genres. Ultimately, she sees her music falling into a pop/folk mix.

An "avid Twitterer and Facebooker," Lacey says she tried to avoid reading too many comments about her and her performances.

"The article where Leigh Nash said great things about me I definitely read and was super-excited to hear from her, because she is a great vocalist and I've been a big fan for years, obviously.

"So some things I read, if I knew they were going to be positive. I tried to keep the positivity around, instead of anything negative. That's hard to do when you're just reading through everything. I made sure I knew what I was going to read before I read it."

As to the contestants remaining in the competition, Lacey says this season "is up for grabs -- somebody's got to win it."

Lacey says all four judges came up to her after Wednesday's show and offered words of encouragement. "They genuinely care about the contestants," she says. "Sometimes it's hard to hear their critiques, but they're there to help you."

Lacey also had a few words for her fans back in Amarillo, Texas. First, she says she said many nice things about her hometown for Tuesday's background segment on her and seemed disappointed with the comments the producers chose to use. Second, she'll be returning home soon and looks forward to hanging out at her favorite movie theater and Starbucks. "I will always be an Amarillo girl," she says.

Lacey says that her fans "kept me smiling through the competition. They've been so sweet. ... I'm just excited about the future."
