Disney has cast one of France’s most in-demand young stars, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, in the key role of Syrena for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Syrena, according to Pirates’ press notes, is a “beautiful and alluring young mermaid” who will play opposite Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow. Few plot details have been given for this latest movie, though we know that Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom’s characters Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner will not be back for the new iteration directed by Chicago helmer Rob Marshall.Berges-Frisbey, 23, is a French model and actress, who has appeared in French films La Premiere Etoile and Un Barrage Contre le Pacifique and the French stage production of Peter Shaffer’s Equus. The movie is set to begin filming in June on location in Hawaii, Great Britain and Los Angeles. It’s slated to open on May 20, 2011.
