Nokia N8 played with, pictured and … trashed

Nokia may have postponed the release of their latest Symbian^3 flagships by a few weeks. But the cat was already out of the bag.

Nokia execs themselves admitted that their telecom and sales partners have already seen and used them. Spy pics and specs of the devices like Nokia N8 and Nokia E7 have been floating around the net for a while now.

Well, today we get the next best thing before an official announcement – a first hands-on impressions, with good interface pics of Nokia N8 (Vasco) Symbian^3, from Mobile-review.com’s Eldar Murtazin.

And, contrary to the claims of Nokia execs, he seems mightily unimpressed with the upcoming Nokia flagship. According to him, overall feel of the new UI – it’s just a more of the same old S60 feel, a bit more polished. Actually, his conclusions about the device are pretty devastating:

“…they’ve made cosmetic improvements, that users should like. And users do not like them. I get a feeling that Nokia is living in some wonderland, where people are buying it’s products in droves. But this is not the case. And as a flagship product, Nokia N8 looks not just bleak, but as something incomprehensible. With the help of advertising, they will get people’s attention, start selling and will sell quite a few of them. Just to scare more people away from Nokia brand. A feeling is that there are some competitor moles working at Nokia, sabotaging the work. Purposefully destroying Nokia brand step by step. I can not find any other explanation for current events…”

Well, not a ringing endorsement, isn’t it? Let’s hope that’s mainly because of the prototype software, and that in 3-4 months until the handset ships, things get much better.

And now onto some more Nokia N8 features/specs that have been confirmed by Eldar:
  • glass covered display, multi-touch support
  • touchscreen feels exactly as the one on Nokia X6, takes some time to get used to text entry
  • 12.1 mpx Carl Zeiss lens with (Xenon?) flash. Picture quality a bit better then on SE Satio, HD video recording at 720p
  • Overall handset is pretty fast, until there’s no content on it. If loaded with apps, pics, video etc; traditional lags reappear
  • HDMI output. However, the port is non-traditional size, could not use the standard cable

Well, that’s about it for now, stay tuned as we learn more stuff about upcoming N8 and E7 handsets.
