Smaller, cheaper Apple iPad to come in 2011?
Apple sold 300,000 iPads in only one day, and this clearly shows that its tablet is a successful product. However, for some, a 10 inch tablet might be a bit too big. But would Apple (which will unveil iPhone 4.0 OS later today) want to make a smaller tablet?
According to DigiTimes, it just might. The Taiwanese website quotes “upstream component sources” in saying that Apple plans to launch a new iPad in the first quarter of 2011. This should have a 5 to 7 inch display.
It’s said that the price of the smaller iPad will be under $400 (the cheapest iPad available now costs 500$ – it’s the 16GB model with Wi-Fi and no 3G).
Reportedly, the mini iPad “will target the highly-portable mobile device market and consumers that focus mainly on reading and do not have a high demand for text input.” Not having a high-demand for text input doesn’t make too much sense, but anyway.
DigiTimes also mentions the HP Slate, which runs Windows 7 and should be launched in mid 2010 as an iPad competitor – although “the HP Slate is unlikely to provide a competitive portable experience to the iPad since it uses an Intel processor which consumes more power.”
