The Titans dominates Friday box office with a $28 million take

With a $28 million Friday coupled with $4.2 million from its Thursday night shows, Clash of the Titans is well on its way to a big box office weekend — and a record-breaker for the usually soft Easter weekend. Right now the 3-D movie is on track to generate around $67 million for the three-day frame. That number could of course rise should the PG-13 rated actioner have a huge Saturday.

The other movie that’s doing crazy business this frame has no 3-D in it nor any monstrous beasts. Rather Tyler Perry’s sequel Why Did I Get Married Too had a huge Friday with an estimated $12 million. That puts the movie in the $30 million range for the weekend, far above what Perry’s 2007 original film scored and an opening that would only rival Perry’s biggest debut, last year’s Madea Goes to Jail. How to Train Your Dragon is likely to nab the third slot for the frame, with its Friday number at an estimated $11 million, down only 9 percent from last Friday. That should put its weekend take in the $26 million range.

Slot four will likely go to Miley Cyrus’ dramatic debut Last Song. The romantic weepy generated around $7 million on Friday, which could translate into a $18 million weekend. The fifth spot of the frame will be a race between Alice in Wonderland and last weekend’s opener Hot Tub Time Machine. While the two films couldn’t be more different, they both grossed close to the same number on Friday, about $3 million. It will be a horse race to see which one lands in slot five, with a weekend gross that should be in the $8 million range. Check back tomorrow for my full report.
