Lady Gaga vs. ‘Idol’: Nobody Wins

This hasn’t been an easy week to be a behemoth of either pop music or television. On the one hand you have the colossally popular Lady Gaga, right, who got the gossip columns buzzing about the amount of time it may or may not have taken her to emerge from her dressing room at the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday night. On the other you have the monstrously successful “American Idol,” whose ratings have seen worrisome declines this year amid complaints about a ho-hum lineup of contestants. Put the two phenomena together, as happened on Wednesday night, and you should have a high-wattage hit. But instead, the pairing just made the week worse for both parties. Hours after Lady Gaga appeared on the show to perform her songs “Bad Romance” and “Alejandro,” she was on Twitter complaining about how she was presented on the show. “FOX POORLY + AMATEURLY edited+cut my performance/musical arrangement on idol,” Lady Gaga wrote. She also provided a link to the Web site PerezHilton.com, where she said the full unedited performance could be found. Even in its shortened form, Lady Gaga’s performance was not much help to “American Idol,” which posted its worst Wednesday-night ratings since 2002. Fox declined to discuss Lady Gaga’s remarks and a representative for Fremantle Media, which produces the show, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
