Verizon Probably Not Getting the iPhone Next Week

Apple CEO Steve Jobs is widely expected to announce the next generation iPhone on June 7, and a well-known industry analyst is predicting that this device will be an AT&T exclusive at launch. Still, a version for Verizon might be coming later in the year.

"We believe that it is unlikely that the next generation iPhone will be available at Verizon (or Sprint) at launch; rather, it is more likely that it remains exclusively available at AT&T in the U.S. at launch," Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray wrote in a research note to investors.

End of an Era

AT&T has had an agreement with Apple to be the sole U.S. provider for the iPhone since its inception, but persistent but unconfirmed rumors have indicated that this is coming to an end.

According to a recent unconfirmed report, Apple has hired a company in Taiwan to produce a version of the iPhone with support for CDMA wireless networks, the cellular-wireless standard used by Verizon and Sprint. Production is supposedly going to begin in August or September

In addition, unnamed sources at several large companies have claimed to be testing a version of the iPhone with support for Verizon's nascent 4G network. This LTE-powered model will allegedly be released this summer.

If these unsubstantiated reports are correct, Apple will release a version of its smartphone for AT&T first, but a model for Verizon will come a few months later.

An Early Look at the iPhone HD

Although the formal unveiling of Apple's next smartphone isn't expected until next week, a great deal of information about the model has already leaked out.

It will supposedly be named the iPhone HD, and have a touchscreen with IPS and a resolution of 640 x 960, significantly higher than the 320 x 480 ones in all previous versions, and even higher than the 480 x 640 screens used by many competitors.

Its expected to be the debut of iPhone OS 4.0, the first version of Apple's operating system that will allow third-party applications to run in the background.

A prototype unit that somehow appeared in Vietnam is running this OS on an Apple A4 processor, a 1 GHz chip also used in the new iPad. The device will reportedly have 512 MB of RAM.

In addition to a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, there is strong evidence that the next iPhone will support iChat video conferencing using a front-facing camera.

Several images that have leaked out show it sporting a new, less rounded look.

Release Date?

Apple's Steve Jobs will take the stage on Monday, June 7. Exactly what he will say on the first day of Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) has not yet been revealed, but industry watchers point out that the most likely possibility is his company's next smartphone.

Even if Steve Jobs takes the wraps off the next-generation iPhone that day, it's not clear if this will be the actual release date for this model. In the past, Apple has announced its smartphones and then put them on the market later.

Piper Jaffray' Munster is predicting the product will be available later in June.
